Last words on late Ariel Sharon.
Many words will be written about Ariel Sharon. Jews have the tendency to forget and forgive even when their life depends on the need to keep intact clear mind and clear thinking.
This is the case of Ariel Sharon.
Sharon was a fearless fighter for Israel’s survival who turned distrusted and corrupt. He also split the Israeli nation and earthquaked the political establishment of Israel.
If Israel ever had a post Ben-Gurion and Menachem Begin like tenacious leader who could have led her to a complete victory over her enemies and the fulfillment of the Zionist dream of settling the entire country from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea, it was Sharon. Instead, Ariel Sharon became the greatest political tragedy modern Israel has known, a tragedy for all Israelis.
Sharon has cheapened the value of the Land of Israel and has made it a bargaining chip, a tool to pressure Israel to make concessions to the Arabs while they give nothing in return but more rocket attacks and terror, more disrespect and disregard for the Jewish state and Jewish life; Sharon has made it clear to the entire world that Jews can be expelled from their homes and farms, even by their own, other Jews.
As I say, Jews have got a short memory and the “Ariel Sharon Media Festival” that has just begun will continue for the next few days with around the clock broadcasts that were planned, for years, by the Israeli Left leaning media. That media that was joyous seeing their brothers and sisters who were made homeless and the land they, Jews, brought to life and made bloom, then forced to leave, turned to be a rocket launching land for thousands of rockets that have been raining on Israeli towns with no end in sight.
Since Israeli media is Left leaning, the great tragedy Sharon inflicted, in 2005, on 10,000 Israelis and their 23 thriving communities in Gush Katif in the Gaza Strip area will be filed away and hardly, if at all, mentioned. Israelis tend to brush under the carpet and wipe from their memory horrific mistakes that were made and hardly tend to lean form them.
The tragedy Sharon brought about when he broke away from the Likud Party, rushed to form his new party, Kadima, and stampeded to make Gaza Judenrein – clear of Jews – was not only inflicted on every evicted Israeli, men, women and children, but also on the Arabs who remained behind; they lost thousands of labor opportunities and with that a better life standard. They ended up living as oppressed by Hamas society, that is an Islamic murderous terror organization, at war with Israel from its get go.
The sarcastic truth is that until 2005 Ariel Sharon was rather disliked by the Israeli Left, the UN and the international leaders. And now, the very same people and organizations who could not stand him are rushing to pour accolades and condolences on the man who evicted his own people, who did what so many nations did for 2000 years, evict and expel Jews from their land, at a whim. He set a precedent that has come to haunt every Israeli and many Jews and non-Jews who staunchly support Israel, for one I refer to myself.
What is more scary is that Sharon, had he did not have a stroke, had a plan to inflict on Judea and Samaria the very same fate as the Gush Katif in Gaza calamity, which would have advanced the Arabs’ ongoing goal to eliminate Israel in stages.
Ariel Sharon was ruthless and his ruthless methods earned him the moniker “The Bulldozer”; Sharon was a political bully. He is guilty of one other tragedy, better yet a crime: he has introduced to Israeli politics the “legitimacy” of complete reversal of intentions. Meaning, being elected based on promises that are diametrically opposite once the position is assumed. And thus he paved the way for the leaders who followed him to commit the same, mind you dangerous, transgressions, as they do.
Giving credit where credit is due, Ariel Sharon was one of the Israel’s most brilliant generals and military strategists. He was a fearless soldier in defense of Israel; he was instrumental in forming the elite commando force, Unit 101, that mounted counterterrorist operations against Arab-Palestinians in the 1950s. He was called reckless, with his own troops and with Arab-Palestinian civilians. But his operations in the 1967 and 1973 wars won praise.
Not a yes-man, courageous, daring without equal, determined and argumentative, Sharon left his print on the modern state of Israel early years’ history.
The mix of characteristics led him to incredible achievements as well as horrendous failures. One can say, from a hero to a zero, from a fearless Zionist turned a Fearless anti-Jews.
Though Sharon was the father of building the new communities in Judea, Samaria and Gaza, he single handedly destroyed his own labor of love and with it the livelihood and the spirit of Zionism of thousands of Jews.
Sharon swore to protect the communities of Gush Katif, as he was protecting Tel Aviv, but instead he went on to demolish Gush Katif to rubble and with that he exposed Shderot and Be’er Sheva, in the south, and Tel Aviv, in the center, to ongoing possible rocket attacks from Gaza.
Sharon’s Gush Katif ill thought and executed tragedy has one very important silver lining: the expulsion proved, though extremely costly proof, the dire results that follow when handing over Jewish land to the Arabs. Hopefully enough worrisome, as we all hope and pray, to cause a pause in the mind of any future Israeli leader who contemplates to take the very same extreme action.
Sharon’s face will forever be the face of Gush Katif’s expulsion tragedy. He will be forever the face of territorial concessions and the cause for increased Arab voracious appetite for making demands and blackmailing the Jewish state in return for nothing.
Ariel Sharon blew it for himself and for the entire state of Israel and every living Jew. A tenacious leader who could have brought Israelis enemies to a total surrender. A Zionist who could have been instrumental in settling the entire land from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea. But he did not do that. Instead, he ended up being punished by G-D; he lay on his back, comatose for 8 years, while the Power above was mourning the loss of His land and the suffering of His children, which Sharon caused.
Strangely enough, the Almighty decided to welcome Sharon to his kingdom on Saturday, Shabbat, the 10th day in the month of Shvat and among the historical events that took place on the 10th day in Shvat it is worth noting,
In his speech on the anniversary of his rise to power, Hitler declared that if war breaks, the Jewish race in Europe, will be extinct and Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, was crowned the seventh Rebbe of Chabad Movement. The former goal was to exterminate the Jews of Europe and the latter goal was to build the Jewish Nation. Ariel Sharon built and destroyed.
All remains is for us to add another prayer that present Israeli leaders, how weak they are, will take after Sharon’s worth remembering traits and avoid like a plague, his failings.
