You've got it. Back to the article--you're absolutely correct that there is not connection. And I'm thrilled for the author's happiness, but I hold most of the same values as she does. I don't see how separating men and women leads to any of them. At my wedding there was mixed and separate dancing. Everyone chose for themselves. I don't think there was any less happiness or exuberance.

No, it's not easy to be tolerant. The mehitza seriously disturbs me. But I am tolerant. Where do I draw the line? I expect my civil rights to be respected by the State in every public place in the country including at the Kotel. And just so you don't think I am evading your question about the statue: I would be able to ignore and tolerate a small 'personal' statue if someone would bring one. I would not like to see a large permanent statue set up at the Kotel any more than I like the large and permanent walls set up to the cult of gender segregation.

It grieves me not only that women were arrested at the Kosel but that the prefatory addition of lines from a recent NYTimes news item has mistakenly conveyed precisely the opposite message as the one I intended. Indeed, what the joy of that endless dancing reminded those of us who were present is that within our real and extreme differences is to be found our shared--and real, albeit cliched--ideal: a spirtuality that fosters our sisterhood and brotherhood.

The ideal is real.

I think it's well within our power to connect as unique individuals, to trust each other's essential goodwill. Doing so would be fascinating.

Let's dance

Easy for you to say, coming from the other side of the argument, however, I'm sure there's something that some other worshipper could want to do that would offend you. Where do you draw the line? Are you willing to let someone place a statue there and have them pray to it?

Well said Bruce!. To Yonatan: Those 'other Jews' need to keep their eyes in their siddur and stop being 'bothered' by every little thing that is ever so slightly different from their own custom.
I don't get the connection between your daughter's segregated wedding and why I should be arrested each Rosh Hodesh when I pray with my group - Women of the Wall in the women's section of the Kotel. When I pray at the Kotel I don't look over the mehitza or beyond my prayer book to see what other people are wearing and I am tolerant of other people's different ways of prayer.
They want to pray in a way that seriously disturbs a lot of other Jews that also want to pray there. They can put on their tallaisim and tefillin at their Beit Knesset without bothering a soul. Where do you draw the line? Just let everyone do everything they want?

This is a beautifully written article, but I fail to see how it relates to the Women of the Wall. The Women of the Wall are not seeking the removal of the mechitza at the Kotel, nor are they seeking to pray on the men's side of the mechitza. They want to pray together, once each month, on the women's side of the mechitza. Just like you shared the joy of dancing with your daughter and other female relatives on the women's side of the mechitza at the wedding.
