What does President Obama have to do with it? What way is he going? I see far more problems from an obstructionist Republican House who seem hell bent on strangling the economic recovery to stick to extreme ideologies and to score political points against a Democratic President.

What is the source of your numbers for aliya last year? I saw a very different number. I'm not saying you are wrong. I'm just curious.

Regarding cost of living, it depends where you live in Israel and where you live in the U.S. Tel Aviv is way more expensive than Houston and less expensive than New York City. That's the most expensive place in Israel. If you can live in the Negev or in the Galillee there may be additional incentives offered by the Israeli government when you make aliya and the cost of living will be much lower. In addition, tax rates vary from state to state and even city to city in the U.S. That tax rates will be higher is also not a given.

The real issue for North American Jews is that wages are significantly lower in Israel. In my field, with a skill set that is in very high demand in the U.S., I would have to take a minimum of a 2/3 cut in pay if I made aliya now. That's why I must first be debt free and then have a substantial savings ready. Many people who are comfortable and don't feel threatened are not likely to make aliya under any circumstances for purely financial reasons. Most Americans and Canadians don't have the level of attachment to Israel I have, such as family ties.

In places like Yemen and Iran the Jewish population has no choice. They are not permitted to leave and it is extremely dangerous to try. In the case of Yemen there was a recent article about Israeli government efforts to help that population escape.

I enjoyed reading this - a good honest piece. Whilst I'd love to see more people making Aliyah, I think that it's fair to recognize that the timing has to be right if you're going to do it successfully. Your comment about reasons and excuses hits the mark - it's a shame that more people don't recognise the difference between the two...

It also took us 16 years to make Aliya and we ended up coming with three teenage (or almost teenage) girls. Believe me, it was no picnic for them to get adjusted. Thank G-d, they are all doing well, and it's been about three years since anyone has said, "when I graduate from high school I'm going back". But that's besides the point. It took us 16 years--and I was resentful of those people in Israel telling us that "we were making excuses" for not coming during that time. You will come when you can. Supporting your children when they decide to come helps. Keep the dream alive. We'll be here, welcoming you with open arms when you arrive.
