Of all the most disturbing articles (and there are many) I may have ever read in The New York Times, perhaps nothing surpasses the sheerly terrifying article which appeared in today’s paper. According to a nationwide survey of Jews conducted by the Pew Research Center’s Religion & Public Life Project, 71 percent of non-Orthodox Jews intermarry.
66% of American Jews don’t belong to a synagogue, 25% don’t believe in God, and 33% had a Christmas tree in their home last year. If these statistics are indeed accurate, American Jewry has had a terrible awful heart attack. Indeed, in many ways, the non-Orthodox are on the verge of collapse.
What must our grandparents be saying? The deputy director of the Pew religion project said “Older Jews are Jews by religion. Younger Jews are Jews of no religion.” Simply terrible for anyone concerned with the future of Jewish life in America.
What further proof can there be that new Jewish leadership and thoughts in America are needed? Simply terrifying – and awestruck by the results of this survey.
