Natan, it's no secret that any university would fail a student for submitting an academic paper that failed to cite sources. Imagine if the student asked for the decision to be appealed and during the appeal process provided "citations" to "sources" back to up his paper. What "sources" did he cite? A previous paper that he himself had authored that had also gotten a big fail for the exact same offence. How ingenious. In any case, it's no secret that writing and publishing garbage is the modus operandi for most people - be they professional journalists or some Jo shmoe blogger. Nevertheless, there are some red lines - one of which is liable. By allowing pure liable to be published on their site - even if it's posted by a blogger off the street in their opinion section and not a journalist - TOI have pretty much opened up a pandora's box of legal problems against them.

Robert, don't mention facts. Facts are an inconvenience that need either be discarded or distorted. Never mind that the call for Pollard's release is a bipartisan issue in both Israel and the US. In israel leftists like Peres and Aviv Gefen have called for his release and in the US democrats and republicans in congress have called for his release. Never mind that a former US Attorney general a former CIA director, a former secretary of state all called for Pollard's release. Never mind that in a written statement to Barak Obama, a senator who was on the senate intelligence committee - Dennis Deconcini - and had full access to the information that Pollard passed on to Israel, testified that this information was passed on to Israel only, was not passed on to a third country and did not harm US interests. Never mind, that Ames whose treason led to the deaths of 11 people has received far better treatment than pollard and many other traitors who actually spied or fought for america's enemies were released or got a slap on the wrist.

Let's take it easy on Marc--as Marc and others have made clear, this is a blog, not a heavily researched journalistic column, and is more akin to speculative conversation around the Shabbos table rather than anything aiming for a Pulitzer.

That being said--while I agree some of his comments and conclusions are a bit weak (particularly, how Zygier's response to Koutsoukis of Fairfax Media was a red herring--even Koutsoukis said he found Zygier's response reasonable and not like that of a guilty man: http://www.abc.net.au/lateline/content/2013/s3690870.htm), Marc's ultimate conclusion, that Zygier betrayed (or was about to betray) Israel to Australia (and not that he was an Iranian double agent, or an anti-Zionist Vanunu) is a view held by many.

Barak Ravid, in a much better argued article with fuller sources and references, essentially comes to the same conclusion:
http://www.haaretz.com/news/diplomacy-defense/israel-partially-lifts-gag-order-on-case-of-dual-citizen-s-prison-suicide.premium-1.503449#.UR0EECYUMs4.twitter

I personally think, that the extreme isolation of his detention suggests either extreme seriousness to his crime or that it was necessary to keep him isolated because of his potential behavior.

It seems that the justice system was kept informed of the detention, and a diverse group of people of high standing were convinced enough of the validity of the case against him, that the case was kept under wraps for so long. Even his attorney Avigdor Feldman has kept quiet until now. If there was an extreme travesty of justice, I think we would have heard about this earlier.

I am inclined to think, particularly given Zygier's junior standing in Mossad, that the extreme detention is less punitive and more preventive (of keeping him from contact with others), which would explain why those privy to the case, did not attempt to "spill the beans."

We have no idea about Zygier, and to what extant he was compromised or how.

I am curious to know: Zygier's death--was it suicide? Aside from the extreme difficulty of suicide in a "suicide proof" cell, Avigdor Feldman found him in a reasonable state days before his death. What happened?

I could totally identify with Zygier's reaction to the journalist and by itself do not find it intuitively obvious that his reaction was was not innocent one. In fact, I find Mildiner's response a bit canned and overly prepared. That said, people can have widely different reactions.

While there must be some fire beneath the smoke to get Mossad fired up I find it a stretch that anything presented here substantiates, or even implies wrong doing.

Just to balance things out I propose that Zygier death was faked as part of a Mossad plot to establish a new identity for a high value agent.

At the time of Pollards arrest, Aldrich Ames was head of US counter-intelligence and he was spying for the Russians. He turned over just about every agent the USA had in the USSR ( who were all killed ) and then framed Pollard for it.
The ghosts of Pinhas Lavon & the "Third Man".
(Cairo 1954), are making a comeback with all the unseemly permutations.
The way I read it for now:
Sadly, some real amateurs operated this poor fella, because he tripped on.
an Australian "trigger" alerting Canbera that he is up to.
a variation on the Mossad job in Aukland, NZ, it is demeaning to underestimate.
,friends and foes, by changing names several times.
after "leaving" to "immigrate", than come back to hang out.
with "odd looking" students...is a bit of an insult to the Australians.
having their "identity" as a nation being used like a frequent flyer plan...
Have I divulged classified sources? I do what all Israeli journalist do.
read the internet, nobody bothers to investigate.
or originate in house stories?

This affair goes back to Mr. Dagan's days, perhaps in time somebody.
will talk, it took tears before Lavon resigned, and with the debacles of 1973,
or the "job" in Lilihammer, Norway, few took responsibility.
Did the M.I chief who betrayed the Egyptian double agent who "fell off".
the building in London, ever account for his betrayal?
Meantime, the wife is out of reach, she has parents, who are they?
I am not sure the Israeli media is doing much work other than.
feed off overseas gossip...on the "second anniversary" of this.
platform perhaps the renowned and celebrated Mr. Horowitz
will concentrate on serious journalism which is still in vogue,
not extrapolating bits of data from the Guardian-U.K, The Age, etc..
This no way to run a legit outfit, what gives the entity a reputation is.
in house developed stories. There is no doubt in my.
mind that serious students of journalism could do some.
research on the internet and come up with material.
that is similar or nearly as good, why bother with staff.
reporters if the idea is to feed on others' stories?

or originate in house stories?

This affair goes back to Mr. Dagan's days, perhaps in time somebody.
will talk, it took tears before Lavon resigned, and with the debacles of 1973,
or the "job" in Lilihammer, Norway, few took responsibility.
Did the M.I chief who betrayed the Egyptian double agent who "fell off".
the building in London, ever account for his betrayal?
Meantime, the wife is out of reach, she has parents, who are they?
I am not sure the Israeli media is doing much work other than.
feed off overseas gossip…on the "second anniversary" of this.
platform perhaps the renowned and celebrated Mr. Horowitz
will concentrate on serious journalism which is still in vogue,
not extrapolating bits of data from the Guardian-U.K, The Age, etc..

Absolutely and I don't claiim that it's anything else, I don't think that there is anything wrong with speculation on this, I think everyone already is, has been and will be speculating on it for a long time to come and I simply blogged my take on it.
