Absolutely ridiculous article. I don`t even know where to begin with the claims made in this blog but let`s just take this the ludicrous claim of " the right to self-determination of the Ulster Protestant people", A) The Protestant people in any part of Ireland were not denied self determination.Ulster contains nine counties not six.B) Two of the six counties which became the statelet of N Ireland (against the democratic wishes of the of the Irish people) had nationalist majorities. It says a lot about the author of this article that he fails to consider the self determination of these people. The fact is Ireland was partitioned (a favourite British colonial policy) against the wishes of the Irish people and at the threat of a bloody war. C) Conor Cruise O`Brien is a totally discredited historian who blamed the Catholic people Of Derry who were demanding civil rights for their own murders on bloody sunday.One thing Ireland certainly has in common with Israel is that we both have revisionists who are trying to rewrite history to suit their political slants. Conor Cruise O`Brien is our very own Illan Pappe, both of them are scorned by real historians.
I support Israel not because I`m an Irish Republican or politically centre right but because it is morally and historically right to do so. Beware of people (on both sides) who use Israel as a political football to further their own agendas.

Judith, I am Irish. And I have spent all my life in Ireland. How many Irish do you know ? Any talk of *The Irish* [ exactly like *The Jews* ] is absurd – there are about 6.2m on the Island. I have met, and debated on radio with, that disgusting and virulently anti-Israeli agitator [ an academic *historian* for whom his *history* is more agitation ] Ilan Pappe, and debated on radio with the pro-Ahmadinejad US-based Rabbi Weiss of NK – Is that evidence that *The Israelis or The Jews are anti-Israel* ? If you want to lose friends, continue such racist smearing of entire peoples. I greatly admire those Muslim Arabs who volunteer for the IDF [ as much as I despise those ultra-haredim who refuse to defend it ] – such Arabs who risk life and limb to defend their Jewish neighbors, are living proof that not all Arabs or all Muslims are enemies of Israel. Words are weapons – target them as carefully as you should physical weapons.

Eamon De Valera suppressed both the Blueshirts and the IRA — more brutally than the British would suppress the IRA in Northern Ireland in the 1970s. And De Valera secretly supported the Allies in WW2. (Ireland would not have been a useful ally had it joined as a belligerent; it had no navy or air force at all and only a tiny army. Germany would have easily invaded it and occupied it, making live very miserable for the US and UK — not to mention the small Irish Jewish community.)

I was in Ireland 4 1/2 years ago and didn't see a single PLO flag. The IRA has very little support in Ireland; Sinn Fein has not even managed 10% of the vote in any Irish election since the 1920s.

That is not true, of course. Ireland is such a small country. How can you compare Ireland with the hositilty of France's Muslims, and there are others. Jews in ireland do not walk around in fear as they do in parts of England.

I don't know that the "misconceptions" may be on Israel's part. What is abundantly clear is that there is hardly a non-Arab, non-Muslim country anywhere in the world more hostile to the State of Israel than Ireland.

The Blueshirts were a national movement in the 1930s.

The Limerick pogrom was whipped up in 1904 by a Redemptorist priest. The pogrom itself did not kill anybody, but there was a subsequent boycott of Jewish businesses that drove out the entire Jewish community.
