For the first time in my writing “career” I have an admission to make. In the case of “Apple Inc vs the US Government, I wrote four previous articles. I never published any of them. Every time I completed an analysis and it was ready for submission, it became outdated with a new twist or turn.
Originally, in Article number one, I wrote a very naïve piece about the need of a government to protect its’ populace from terrorism at all costs. Therein, I concluded that in the case of the San Bernardino terrorist murderers, the US had the right to force Apple to unencrypt/ or “crack” open their phone for the sake of national security. To my credit, I did not suggest that Apple Inc. should have to bare the brunt of the costs in so doing. Upon the hearing of FBI, veiled threats towards Apple, warning that should the company persist in its refusal to do as told, that legislation would be introduced to force all cell phones to have devices implanted in them to give governments the potential for spying upon the user, my article number one went into the shredder . I began again.
In article number two, I reminisced about a University of Cincinnati Conference which I co-chaired, entitled “1984 is Only 17 years away.” George Orwell’s book, published originally in 1949, a full sixty-seven years ago, was becoming portentous to University students even after 35 years of publication. It had become a “classic” and was taught in classrooms nationwide. Orwell understood the fundamental nature of governments and human beings in possession of too much unbridled power. He warned of the potential misuse of technology in the future. It seems that the Times Magazine “Person of the Year” award should be given posthumously to the one author who had the imagination to envision the future, and the courage to warn us all, about the threat of technological advancement- how it would impinge on the life of every citizen in the future. In article number two I suggested that surely the US Government must have the brainpower to crack open the IPhone without going to the Supreme Court to force Apple to do the deed. Upon hearing the previous NSA (National Security Agency) Chief, Cyber Czar Richard Clark speak on the subject, my opinion was confirmed as fact. Thus, the second article went into the shredder.
Hence, I began article number three, discussing Richard Clark’s conclusions. He spoke on NPR radio and stated that all of his professional associates in the NSA agreed that the FBI was only attempting to force Apple Inc. to do their bidding in an attempt to set a legal precedent which the US Government would be able use in the future- to encroach on the liberties of its people. He claimed that in fact, the NSA and the FBI could easily crack the IPhone in question if it so wished. Upon hearing that the Supreme Court case had been put on “Hold” my third article went back into the file with its predecessors.
My fourth article reviewed all that had occurred and what was at risk. By then, the entire world was so tired of hearing about APPLE Inc., that even I did not want to publish my article. Terrorist bombings in Turkey and in Brussels took center stage and the case against Apple became yesterday’s news.
This is now article number five and this one will indeed be published. What I never imagined, was the miracle wherein ” Goliath” AKA the United States Government’s FBI eventually went not to a US technology firm to unlock the phone, but to an Israeli company to solve the problem.
What does this say about the American diminished capacity in the High Tech field? Consider what this implies regarding the importance of Israel to the United States security interests!
Most important of all, is the crisis which was averted by hair’s breadth. One of the most crucial moments in the history of individual liberties, was first thwarted by the refusal of Apple Inc. to do the bidding of the US Government. It took courage and fortitude for which Apple deserves respect. But the ultimate antithesis of the “great Goliath”, the United States, is the hero- the “little David” – Israel. Whilst being assaulted from all sides in the media and on campuses via the tentacles of those wanting her demise, and besieged throughout the Middle East and Europe, Israel has prevailed once again. This tiny country surrounded by enemies on every front has developed its’ capabilities to such an extent that its’ High Tech corporations are lauded around the globe. It is Israel, which at the end of the day will resolve the problem. No need for the FBI to continue its’ case against Apple in the Supreme Court, nor its attempted attack on the rights of privacy of every American . Ultimately had the US Government succeeded, every citizen of every nation would have been impacted. At risk were fundamental human rights . Where are the voices lauding the little David who by virtue of their expertise, preserved their privacy from the great Goliath?
George Orwell warned the world of the dangers of unlimited power in the hands of governments. His predictions are becoming true in this new reality. Technology is impinging on all our lives. Now is the moment for damage control.
It is time to look truth in the face and for the world to give the State of Israel its rightful respect in the family of nations. Goliath came to David, and David will save the day.
