I know I’m not the only one who is watching the impotent and confused American response to the Ukranian crisis with despondency. To see what was once the greatest power in the world, the beacon of democracy, reduced to acting like an amateur actor who forgot his lines is pathetic. Add to this the planned cutbacks in military spending, and the USA looks like it’s on it’s way to isolationism.

But say what you will about the isolationists about the 1920s and 1930s – they were at least consistent and honest. No intervention (in the Eastern Hemisphere), no way, now how. Was it ruthlessly self-interested? Yes. But it was logical, consistent and most of all – it was honest. The present administration is giving us the worst of both worlds – tossing around empty promises and guarantees while gutting its capability and will to fulfil them.

It’s not that I don’t understand the desire to retreat and defend only interests directly relevant to America – I do. But I’m sick of the lies, the schizophrenic policies and the doublespeak. If America wants to retreat – and many on the right and left want just that, then say so. Say:

“We are tired of being the dominant power and solving everyone else’s problems. From now on, to each his own. All the guarantees are hereby null and void. Deal with your own issues.”

America must decide: involvement or isolation. If it is involved, it must act like the great power it is. If it retreats into itself, then it must declare as much. But the present pathetic charade does no-one any credit.
