Dear Mr. Prime Minister, Knesset Members, Opposition Members and Anyone Who Holds a Position of Power.
Last week a teenage girl was brutally murdered in her bed. A father was shot in front of his family who are also in critical condition, as a result of a drive by shooting. It is hard for me to grasp the atrocities of these crimes committed against our own people, in our own land simply because they are Jewish. It is for this reason we fought to have a country we could call our own. So that these things would not happen, and if they did happen we would have people in power and in high positions defending us.
And in these difficult times I look towards you, our leaders for comfort, for guidance for an explanation, for answers, and I find your responses fail to provide anything other than flowery prose. Your answers fall short and sound flat. Your responses fail to provide me with any sort of level of comfort, guidance, and assurance. Isn’t it your sworn duty to protect me? Isn’t that why you are in a position of power? To serve and protect the people of Israel? Or are you too busy being in love with the position and power you hold to be bothered helping those people who helped put you there in the first place?
Why are you, our leaders failing to provide us with protection? With answers? With comfort and basic security? I find your answers to be lacking anything of substance.
Do you go to sleep with the fear and anxiety that it might be you who is next? Do you have nightmares of sitting Shiva because your loved one has been brutally murdered? Do you have that feeling of dread in the pit of your stomach? Do live with that fear circling you incessantly wondering where it will land next? Because I do. It is with me every hour of every day. It plagues my thoughts, invades my dreams and disturbs my sleep. It haunts my every waking moment. I don’t suffer from depression or anxiety, or needless fears, but because I am a “settler”, living in supposed “conquered” land I am left to feel vulnerable, unprotected, exposed and abandoned by the very people who have promised me protection. Do your children fear for their lives? Is there childhood plagued by uncertainty, death and horrific experiences? Because mine do. Or do they know that you will protect them?
In these times of distress and uncertainty, we turn to you: Our leaders. Only to get a cold shoulder. Why? Are we not citizens of this country just like everyone else? Are we not deserving of protection and security just like every other citizen in this country? Why are you so eager to protect and defend everyone else except your own people?
I leave you with the wish that has yet to be utilized and fulfilled in our part of the world from HaTikvah
להיות עם חופשי בארצנו
“To be a free nation in our own country”.
Please hear my voice and use your position to end this labyrinth of terror.
A Jewish Citizen living in the State of Israel
