So the Democratic Party eliminated any mention of God and Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in their platform. There was just one slight problem. As soon as the story broke and became national news, the Democrats realized how utterly embarrassing what they’d done really was and that it would likely cost them votes of ordinary, God-fearing Americans. Let’s be honest, this approached a gaffe worthy of Joe Biden.

Upon realizing the size of the mistake they’d made, Democrats suddenly had an epiphany, made the convention into an ecumenical gathering, and “found religion.” They restored mention of God and Jerusalem as Israel’s capital to their platform and all was well again. Well, not really. You see, the Democrats put the issue to a vote in the convention hall. A two-thirds majority was needed to restore the words at issue to the party platform.

But when convention chairman, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa called for a vote, it sounded like at least half the hall was against restoring the controversial words. So he took the vote a second time. Again, it sounded like the crowd was equally divided. Villaraigosa, looked around, mouth agape, looking confused, lost, and uncertain. In other words, he looked the way he normally does.

Villaraigosa then took a third vote with the same result. Suddenly, Villaraigosa proclaimed the issue decided in favor of reinstating God and Jerusalem as Israel’s capital to a cacophonous chorus of boos.

What we are witnessing, laid bare for all to see on national television, is the internal schizophrenia of the Democratic Party between liberals and the far Left. It was the party leadership which decided the ultimate wording of the party platform, not the people on the floor of the convention. Had it been left up to the convention floor faithful, the attempt to restore the words would have certainly failed.

The far Left wants to strip any mention of God from public life because their ideology is driven by secularism. As for Jerusalem, the far Left would like nothing more than to hand it over to Arab hands and rescue it from “colonialist” Israelis.

Liberals may disagree with the far Left’s positions or agree with those positions, but fear that those views will harm their chances of reelecting a Democrat to the White House. Either way, they know that such positions are unpalatable to a right of center, God-fearing electorate.
