At the very end of this week’s parsha the Jews are given many of the laws of Kashrut. At the end of this section GOD gives to “Be Holy because I am holy,” (Vayikra 11:45). The Sforno (as seen in the Artscroll Commentary on the Chumash) interprets this quote to mean that because GOD is holy HIMSELF he also wants us to achieve holiness as well.
While the parsha uses observing the laws of kashrut as an example of being holy there are many other ways to be holy as well. The main way to be able to achieve this holiness is through the mitzvah of imitating GOD or as Rav Yosef Dov Halevi Soloveitchik Z’’TL would call it to be imitatio Dei. One great way to imitate GOD, the greatest giver of all is to give to others.
With Pesach which includes many mitzvot of being kind to the needy (e.g. giving money and inviting the needy to our seder table) just a few weeks ahead may we take this lesson of needing to be givers like GOD to heart.
May this lead to us have our own personal redemptions going into this Pesach in perfecting our need to be givers and bring the Moschiach may he come speedily in our day.
