I agree that there are MANY non-religious Zionists, but they literally are not as physically visible as the Orthodox are at pro-Israel events, it goes beyond parades. And there is a big constituency of Conservative Jews who send kids to day schools that "wear the flag" as well.

Good post. I think this feeling is quite common among American Jews, their only real view on Israel comes from CNN and honestly, if that is what you have to rely on, Israel does seem like an unsafe place. You have to spend time in Israel, and I mean the real Israel, not one of those canned camp-at-Masada, visit the Wailing Wall for 15 minutes tours. I think the State also has a responsibility to try and display the real nature of Israeli society to help people look beyond the stereotypes.

And by the way, in Pittsburgh where I grew up, most Jews, wore kippot and dressed traditionally for the Israel parades. Perhaps you know the difference and can recognize Orthodox Jews on sight, but maybe that is what gives you the feeling that the majority of Jews that support Parades are Orthodox. Many, many non-Orthodox Jews are Zionists.

That's weird. I just came back from Tel Aviv last Monday after spending four days there. I enjoyed the sun, the long walks along the beaches and through the city. I spent time in cafes and restaurants and absorbed the relaxed atmosphere that people create in this unique city, just by living their normal lives. What else should they do anyway? I never felt unsafe or uneasy at any time. Now I am back in the cold central European winter and wished my holiday could have been longer. By the way, I am a non-Jewish German, and if I can go to Israel in these days, so can you. Don't you think?

This type of cowardice - yes, cowardice - has proved to be fatal in the past. It extends not only to not visiting Israel but also to giving in to anti-Israel discourse just to keep the peace in people's everyday surroundings. We should be more confrontational in relation to jews "who get cold feet" and call them what they are, it usually makes them pause for a second.

The craziest example of a muppet jew is a friend of my father who tells me super happily how he managed to buy a last minute trip to jordan and he's never been to Israel. I did tell him he's a muppet and indeed he got bad conscience and went to see Israel on a day trip. He's still a muppet though. He's not even a coward, he just lacks a certain chip in his brain. Many european jews are like that and I would have loved to believe in the US it's different. But INDEED - why are all the jewish stars and celebs not visiting and standing up for Israel more publicly? COWARDICE is the answer, fear of not being able to be everybody's darling.

We are a nation of cowards it seems.
