Terror is meant to terrify. If you are scared, the terrorists have won. Besides for actively trying to defeat ISIS on the ground, we also have to beat them in our minds and the best way to do that is to keep on living and to on keep doing whatever it is you were doing before they attacked. I’m talking specifically about Syrian immigration.
Yesterday, more than half the nations governors vowed to close their doors to Syrian refugees. One Republican presidential candidate after another has announced their opposition to Obama’s commitment to continue allowing Syrian refugees to enter our country. Jeb Bush and Ted Cruz even went as far as to say we can accept Christian Syrians, but not Muslim Syrians, as if we can tell the difference somehow. All of this is because one of the Paris terrorists was found with a Syrian passport which was used to enter Greece a few weeks ago and which most analysts presume is fake.
Let me put this in perspective for you. Almost 400,000 people have arrived in Europe this year, seeking sanctuary from their war torn home. When America considers taking in Syrian immigrants, we’re talking about 10,000 people — a minuscule number in comparison to the boats full of people that wash up on Europe’s shore every day. Europe cannot control the people coming in because they walk right in through the beaches. We all saw the pictures of the 3-year-old Aylan Kurdi washed up on shore in his little jeans and sneakers. I cried when I saw the pictures of his lifeless body. He had drowned on the way over from Syria and so had his brother Galip. Their mother died on the treacherous journey over the Mediterranean Sea. All they wanted was to get away from the war and to live in peace. The victims of Europe’s migrant crisis are little kids, parents who want a better life, innocent people! They’ve had enough heartbreak and now we’re going to deny them refuge? What if we were them? We had a small taste of this during the Holocaust and people still blame Americans today for not taking us in. We still blame America for not fighting for us. How can we turn our backs on innocent people with this kind of history?
I understand there is a risk in letting refugees in, but America has a very thorough screening process that can do the trick. I understand that some people would rather not take that risk. I understand that some people are scared ISIS will use this as a way to enter America. But get real for a second. You’re kidding yourself if you think there aren’t any ISIS militants in America already. You’re kidding yourself if you think ISIS can’t get in if they truly wanted to. You’re kidding yourself if you think that by denying refugees entrance, we will keep ourselves safe.
Let’s face it. We’re not safe. We’re heading into World War III. We’re all about to face some serious heartbreak. We can’t let our fear get in the way of us helping innocent people.
