Many of you who have commented here feel the need to be on the defensive regarding this man's proposals. Though I would never vote for Tzipi Livni's party for other reasons, I don't think many of you responding to this man's claims are honestly thinking clearly, and are being more emotional than objective. Stop to consider for a moment, how many of you would like it if in the country you lived in, another's religious views were imposed on your daily life? Consider that even just because you didn't share the same level of fanaticism as another, or maybe you just decided to serve your country and so didn't get married early enough, you would now face housing discrimination? How many of you would like there to be a Chief Priest or Chief Pope in your countries dictating social policies? Probably not many. The fact of the matter is that no one in Israel likes them either. They don't represent real Judaism, they represent an 18th century ghetto sect, they discriminate against their fellow Jews in Israel, they don't contribute to society, and they oppress others with their lifestyle. They only make people further distant from their heritage then draw them closer as they should, and don't even represent their authentic heritage but some black hat 18th century European import. Furthermore, freedom of religion and separation of church and state are fundamental values of a modern democratic society. Let them practice their traditions like the ultra-orthodox sects do in America, but not on my dime/shekel and without imposing their ideologies on my life.

This is not about power (well, for some it might be, I can't answer for individuals), it is about maintaining Judaism. The so called "other branches of Judaism" are nothing of the sort. We've had movements like these throughout our history and guess what? None of them survive the test of time. Do you really think that is a coincidence?

We know that whether they admit it or not, the Arab nations, as well as Hamas and hezbollah have been clear about their goal, to wipe out the jewish people and steal their land, land given to them by God himself. However, what is not being brought up and addressed is the blatant hatred and prejudice that exists in the minds and writings of Ultra Orthodox Judaism. Hatred cannot beget anything other than hate. Like begets like. this understanding and concept comes from the author and sustainer of all life The rabbis should never force their rabbinical judaism on the people any more than christians should force people to believe in Yeshua, which by thwe way, REAL christiand don't do, notr do we foster anti-semitism and anti-zionism!

True, I may be "picky"–but I used to be (a long time ago) an editor–and had this piece come across my desk–I would have politely handed it back to the writer, and respectfully asked he or she to (a) remove the subject from the introduction, or (b) develop it in the body of the article. FURTHERMORE, inasmuch as Prof. Tal holds a doctorate, he is obviously aware of the basics of expository writing…SO, I think my question was well justified.
