On July 15th 2014, The Jerusalem Post first reported that Hamas was ready for another ceasefire that will result in no progress towards peace. After Egypt proposed a ceasefire the day before that the Israeli government agreed to, Hamas chose not to accept the deal. Instead, Hamas officials stated that if a ceasefire was to occur, their conditions must be met. These conditions include “the release of re-arrested Palestinian prisoners who were let go in the Schalit deal, the opening of Gaza-Israel border crossings in order to allow citizens and goods to pass through, and international supervision of the Gazan seaport in place of the current Israeli blockade.” A few reasons exist as to why making this ceasefire work under Hamas agreed upon conditions will never work.

The first reason why is because even if such conditions are met, Hamas would continue to fire rockets into Israel much like the last agreed upon ceasefire, when after 10 months of restraint, Hamas violated the agreement and instead fired rockets at Israeli towns cities. Who is to say that Israel agrees to Hamas’ conditions and there is an outbreak of rocket fire from Gaza into Israel in the next 10 months and the two sides have to hammer out another ceasefire?

Next, Hamas is a terrorist organization. I repeat: Hamas is a terrorist organization. Its goals, as stated in its charter, include the destruction of the Jewish State of Israel and to destroy Jewish people. Does that seem like a peaceful organization to deal with in peace talks? Hamas does not want peace. The reason why they are even getting to the point of talking about a potential ceasefire is because the Israeli Air Force has killed 1035 Palestinian people, half of which are estimated to be Hamas operatives. The rest have been mostly because Hamas refuses to say this but they use innocent Palestinian-Arabs as human shields. Also, once IDF force sense that there are Hamas operatives in a particular house they call the house and tell the people inside that they have a couple of minutes to collect their belongings and leave before the Israeli Air Force levels the house. They fire indiscriminately at civilian centers and endanger the welfare of Palestinian-Arabs. Hamas, not Israel, is accountable for putting innocent lives in danger through rockets fired, the use of human shields, terrorist tunnels, and the refusal to engage in a ceasefire.

Just last Thursday, Secretary of State John Kerry went to Israel and proposed a cease fire to stop the fighting in Gaza. He implicitly stated that Hamas gets to keep their rockets and tunnels as well as secure the opening to crossings that will be more socially and economically advantageous to Hamas and Gazans. Never once did he mention what the state of Israel would receive in return for agreeing to the ceasefire. The ceasefire proposal probably would have faltered knowing that Hamas seeks a ceasefire and then breaks it to fire more rockets in to Israel but that is not the point here. The point is that the needs of the State of Israel were not handled sufficiently with Hamas getting more of what they wanted in the proposed ceasefire deal. Additionally, the reason why this whole war in Gaza has escalated is because Hamas kidnapped and killed three Jewish teenagers and continuously fires rockets at innocent Israeli cities and towns, not caring about the damage that these rockets inflict on the lives of Israeli citizens.

Lastly, by giving back all of the rearrested Palestinian-Arab prisoners who were let go in the Schalit deal, Israel runs the risk of future terrorist attacks of Israeli citizens in addition to the numerous other terrorists attacks and abduction of Israeli that already happen now. For example, Baruch Mizrahi, a senior Israeli police officer was killed by Ziad Awad in a Passover eve terror attack near Hebron, by a Palestinian released in the prisoner exchange deal which saw Gilad Schalit freed in 2011 in return for 1,027 Palestinian prisoners. As a result, Hamas, a terrorist organization who are only interested in killing and creating more problems do not qualify in the slightest bit as being a peace partner with Israel nor will it ever understand the true meaning of peace.
