I hope I won’t regret this. I’m about to break a silent rule I had. I vowed to myself when I started writing I would do my best to stay away from negativity. I found that there is plenty of complaining and doggin’ going on without me. Please know, this is not by any means an easy feat for me, but tonight I flipped my lid and need help.
My parents came to Israel to be with us for the holidays. They took us out for dinner to a nice family cafe by the lake. Boom, there it was; Rihanna loud and clear with her nasty S and M lyrics blasting so loudly me and my dad could not even look at each other. I, not being a fan of making waves decided to wait out the 4 painful minutes and tried to resume dinner with my parents without “sex in the air”. Finally the song is over, right? WRONG. Two songs later there it was, BAM! Same song AGAIN! So I said, ” that’s it!” I got up and stormed up to a group of dumbfounded waitresses by the cash register and started making a scene. I went off about how this is supposed to be a nice family place and I can’t even make eye contact with my dad at the dinner table. Blah, blah, blah, more finger wagging and they changed the song. Mind you it was on the loop as every other song, so one tired waitress spent the night running back and forth changing the song.
Anyway, I write this because it seems to be a problem here in general. I can’t take my kids shopping in Fox’s or have lunch with my mom without some X-rated lyrics blasting. As I complained to my sister in law, Faye, she nodded in agreement and chimed in with all her embarrassing experiences.
It appears this is an apparel issue as well. A fine boy we know, and highly doubt is gay, was wearing a t-shirt that read, ” glad to be his boyfriend” . I do believe he does not understand the English or would not have worn that. That one is pretty harmless in comparison with some of the quotes I’ve seen.
What’s the deal? Do the Israelis not understand or do they not care?? Why do I feel I’m the only irate person here. It’s horrible to me that kids sing along with these sexual lyrics and wear t shirts with all sorts of innuendo, at best, on them.
Come on, help me people, if you object as well PLEASE speak out. I can’t win this alone.
