He didn't use the money for any self indulgent luxuries, he actually did lots of chesed with it. And I spent time in his home and with his family. The Torah describes this kind of scenario. The person who sins convinces himself that there is good in what he is doing. He gets lost in his own heart and justifications and strays. He really deluded himself and yes he hurt others, but mostly himself. Yet, he is acting in a very admirable way taking responsibility.

Again, some things are just inexcusable. This was not your average scam. He crossed every possible line – he defied G-d in the most brash, undignified way possible – and never once thought of anyone but himself. He never gave a second thought to how many people he might hurt…not even his wife and kids (who now live in the horrible shadow of his misdeeds). He doesn't deserve your pity.

Whatever wrong he did can not undo the good he did. He spread the beauty of Torah in many ways. His wonderful continence that brought smiles and cheer to so many, his words of Torah that effected me, his support when I was getting interested in Torah, giving me huge discounts on items to take home with me to Kenya. I am very sad for his fall from grace. I have a huge amount of pity for him. A good man who clearly had good middos and yet was seduced by the yetza hara to fill whatever gap or emptiness there was within him. I hope that he is able to do a full tchuva and rejoin the community to which he added a great deal aside from his wild stories.
