Contemporary Turkey went from being a multi-religious, multi ethnic country, to being almost exclusively Sunni Muslim. They only non Turkish speaking ethnic group left, are the Kurds – and we all know how much the Turks and Kurds love and respect each other.

More recently, Turkey invaded Cyprus, and expelled all of the 300,000 ethnic Greeks from their self declared puppet state on the northern half of the Island. supposedly to protect the 18% Turkish minority, descendants of colonists from the mainland and Greeks who converted to Islam, to avoid persecution.

Jews got off lightly. As a far smaller group, we were less of a threat. But the lesson was learned, and 90% of Turkey's Jews quickly left.

It has been estimated that in the 19th and 20th century about 10 million Muslims where killed or driven out of Europe because of their religion, most from the Balkans but also from Bulgaria & Greece. Young countries likes to keep their population as homogenised as possible.

But this is not only a religious phenomena, the United States of America started off by killing virtually all of the lands original population. The Soviet Union killed/imprisoned or drove into exile well over 30 million people to insure the safety of the state. Countries are organisms of their own in some sense, they kill millions of their own people if they feel that their survival is threatened.

It is sad that there are no virtually Jews left in Algeria, I hope this will change in the future.
