As the sirens continue to wail in southern Israel when our enemies’ rockets and mortar fire scream through the what should be a serene sky, I can’t help but feel an incredible sense of pride as a Jew, knowing the resolve of the Jewish State and her people. Not much larger than the state of New Jersey and virtually surrounded by hate, Israel remains a bastion of light within a sea of dark. It is a nation that reveres life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as do the peoples in America. Israel is a nation where Jews, Christians and peaceful Muslims live side by side, praying in their own way for the same outcome, a cessation of the horror, a quieting of the disharmony and a silencing of the hate.

Reverence for life is paramount and a part of our Jewish culture. Breathing fire and brimstone is for the others, not us. We treasure our families and do all that we can to protect the sanctity of our homes. We pray for peace, we give thanks and we are grateful for what we have. And I’m not speaking of material things, but instead about compassion and love for each other and G-d.

I feel extremely blessed to be a Jew and understand in my heart and in my mind what is goodness and purity. G-d has gifted us with an inner sense, a moral and ethical compass if you will that does it’s very best to keep us on the righteous path. Do we stray, certainly, as we are all imperfect, but with G-d inside us, we have the ability to correct our course and to move forward towards enlightenment. Our spirit is the light and our soul is the warm. We must never ever forget our reason to be and always embrace our life journey with a fullness.

A verse from my heart to yours …

That Is Who I Am:

I am a Jew, that is who I am,
I was born a Jew, that is who I am,
I was raised as a Jew, that is who I am,
I became a Jewish man, that is who I am,

I’ve celebrated as a Jew, that is who I am,
I’ve grieved as a Jew, that is who I am,
I’ve prayed as a Jew, that is who I am,
I’ve lived my life as a Jew, that is who I am,

I’m blessed to be a Jew, for that is who I am,
I’m proud to be a Jew, for that is who I am,
I’m strong as a Jew, for that is who I am,
I’m bright as a Jew, for that is who I am,

My heart is that of a Jew, for that is who I am,
My spirit is that of a Jew, for that is who I am,
My soul is that of a Jew, for that is who I am,
And when I die it will be as a Jew, for that is who I am.
