It's actually already happening. In a few months of 2011 alone, some 100,000 Copts emigrated, mostly to the US, Canada, Australia, and Europe, and there may have been 250,000 total for that year. This is a gradual exodus, one that will likely go on for a few years, and increase in numbers as violence and harassment intensifies.

I concur with the poster below: what will happen will probably be more along the lines of harassment and occasional pogroms/rampages to "encourage" Copts to leave. A bit like how the Jewish communities of Yemen, Iraq,... were 'encouraged' to leave after the creation of Israel, except that the Copts will be LEAVING their ancestral homeland rather than have the consolation of returning to it.

Jews were 9.5 million out of hundreds of millions of Europeans. Copts are up to 15 million of 80 million Egyptians. So yeah, it's a bit harder to kill all of them, and a full-scale genocide would prompt sanctions that would likely be followed by a Libya-style Western military intervention. But it would be much easier to expel them from the country and strip them of all their assets as they leave.

"Full-scale genocide is highly unlikely. Ethnic cleansing is a possibility. The Copts are a bit too numerous to easily exterminate" - yup. Just like Jews of Germany, Poland, Hungary, France, Holland etc.....

Silly me- I thought that the only genocide that was going on was the Israeli genocide against the Palestinians. Yes, you know the genocide that resulted in increasing the Palestinian population from 700,000 to 5.5 million over 65 years.

Try not to generalize. I've met Copts who are neither genocidal nor anti-Semitic, nor anti-Israel.. To the contrary. Bear in mind that they are struggling in a tough environment, and are not in a position to stick out their necks too much for Jews or anyone else. Yes, that is cowardice, dhimmitude, etc. but that is reality. And in that context nationalism makes sense. Alawis fan(ned) Syrian patriotism to compete with a Muslim identity that would exclude them. Jews were counted among those who were more Iraqi than the Iraqis and more German than the Germans.. as long as they could. So there should also be some degree of understanding for the precarious situation of minorities in some situations.

The Copts have been oppressed and dispossessed since the Arab-Muslim Conquest of their land, and can be found among the poorest of the masses of a poor country. I remember a child beggar in Aswan who began talking with us, very sweet and funny. After sufficiently charming us, he pointed out that he had no shoes, and that tomorrow was (Coptic) Christmas.. In Cairo there is a Coptic caste that lives in the dump and off the dump (they had pigs to help them turn the trash that only pigs eat, into food that only Christians in the area eat, until the pigs were destroyed by the Muslim Brotherhood about a year and a half ago.). These are not communities with strength and self-confidence, and should be judged with some rachmones.

To end on a fraternal anecdote: Once I and some friends were in the Old City of Jerusalem, and stopped at the Coptic piece of the Holy Sepulchre complex, the Pool of Helena. The friendly monk studying in the chapel area at one point asked us "Are you Jews?" "Yes." His response was an enthusiastic and positive: "Ana baqra' kitab Yahudi!" - I'm reading a Jewish book! He was reading the book of Exodus in a bilingual Coptic-Arabic edition, and read out some verses of the story of the Exodus in Coptic, essentially the language language of Ancient Egypt, to Jews in Jerusalem.

First they came for the "colonists", and the Copts did not speak out because they were not "colonists";.
Then they came for the Jews, and the Copts did not speak out because they were not Jewish;.
Then they came for the Liberals, and the Copts did not speak out because they were not Liberals.

Now they are coming for the Copts. And there is no one left to speak for them - Karma's a bitch, ain't it?

(*Copts actively participate in the Arab national sport of Israel-hatred, and helped facilitate the genocide of Egyptian Jewry. It is very sad to see what's happening there - as with Syria - but make no mistake, these are genocidal anti-semites who are not Israel's friends.)
