Thank you for such an excellent posting on this issue. The complexities of this issue are such that the matter will not be resolved thru minor changes along the fringes of the problem. First and foremost, The 2nd amendment of the US constitution was written to allow it's citizens to protect themselves from an out of control and abusive government. Imagine what a difference it would have made had the Jews been allowed to own guns back in the day, perhaps Shoal would have been far less tragic that it was. Europe is re pleat with examples of what can happen when the citizens are at the complete mercy of its government. Syria is yet another example. Tragic as the loss of 20 beautiful children is, here are the numbers. In the year 2011, 411K people died from tobacco, 60K died from accidents, and 34K died from gun violence, in the UA. Perspective is important. American founding fathers fled a brutal government, solely to have religious freedom. That same Government ruled over the Arab world for years, and had its way. True, social ills and Godless societies all lead to senseless killings, but from my view, our chances are much worse when the citizens are disarmed. It is called freedom. and it works. insha'Allah.

Worse, the Media is actively suppressing information about the shootings that could prevent further deaths-- the Oregon shooting was stopped by a CC gun. The Texas shooting was stopped by an off duty cop with a gun, who worked next door. There are almost assuredly been more, which...where stopped because everybody who has a CC double-checked their carry gun and went over what they'd do if some loon walked in with malice amind.

Gun control is NOT the answer. The Gun is just a tool. Just like a sword, a knife, a hammer or a bow and arrow, or a car! They are all tools too. Nothing more and nothing less. What is really irritating is that the media thinks the guns are the problem, yet most of the media personalities have concealed weapons permits themselves! No, the guns are not the problem anymore than swords, knives or cars are the problem. And, we all know cars cause way more deaths than guns do. Yet no one is trying to outlaw cars. No, this is only about taking guns out of the hands of citizens.

If they wanted to try to deal with the underlying causes and themes that run between the shooters in these mass settings like in Tucson with Jared Loughner (I live in Arizona), or the Aurora, Colorado shooter, Newton Shooter and even the Texas Clock tower shooter from the 1960s look no further than the mental illness issues that affected all of these individuals.

But the media wont, because dealing with mental illness is not as sexy as flashing GUNS....Mental illness is a much murkier problem with no easy solutions. And, it would probably rehash some of the healthcare issues, again, but when you compare mental illness issues vs gun control the Left in the US and the Media (but I repeat myself) gets all giddy because they think they are superior than the rest of the population and that they know better than anyone else what the cause is and since they have written their story before the shooting and the ink has long dried they wont do anything to change it. So, there will be more mass shootings....more blaming guns, blaming movies, blaming video games....instead of blaming the shooter who actually pulled the trigger and blaming the system in place for not being able to recognize or provide help to those who actually need it.

Mental illness is the problem and the media is the problem. They give huge amounts of publicity to the shooter and give that publicity to someone mentally unbalanced with a desire to have some lasting celebrity even if it is after death, and you have a lethal mix there with the prevalence of copy cats. Just Wednesday morning we had reports of a copy cat gunman in Scottsdale Arizona, less than 4 miles from where I work. This issue is going to get far worse - far worse.
