Mahmoud Abbas’ speech this past Friday to the UN continues in the footsteps of Yasser Arafat before him who preferred the sustained murders of innocents, both his own and those Israeli, and uninterrupted Palestinian misery over even the chance of any real gain in order to protect his power and status.

Once again, the Palestinian ‘mainstream’ is demonstrating its complete inability to take advantage of another potentially unique opportunity. Abbas is most certainly aware that Israel is not committing any form of ‘genocide’ in the Territories but also knows that members of the global community with their own agendas will parrot right along.

If anybody really wants to recognize and understand ‘genocide’ and genocidal practices, consider Hitler, Milosevic, the Albanian genocide of 1912 and Rwanda; even the American ‘Trail of Tears’ of 1831. There are certainly are other examples through just the last two centuries.

Though Israel needs a very sincere review of its policies and politics, the persistent use and misuse of settlements and its current management of the Territories, Israeli actions towards the Palestinian Territories are not ‘genocide’ even by the remotest and must deluded definition.

But Abbas knows he can stoke a misguided world community whose random and repeated references to ‘genocide’ simultaneously demeans those who have historically been victims of true genocide. Such baseless vitriol allows bottom feeders like Abbas to manipulate and degrade his own people while simultaneously helping to keep the Israeli hard Right in power.

Hamas could assist in a process that would also help to deflate the Israeli Right by withdrawing primary components of their Charter which actually do prioritize ‘genocide’ by way of its stated intent to kill any Israeli at any time and force all Jews out of the State of Israel. Hamas, however, already has its hands full controlling and brutalizing its own citizens while clinging to their own perception of ‘power.’

Israel is hardly perfect and definitely not perfectly clean but is also and literally fighting everyday for its life and survival. Even in this context, Israel is not committing ‘genocide’ in any form against any Palestinians.

Who thinks Israel, with its disproportionate degree of power as compared to those in the Palestinian Territories, would allow Hamas to exist or its known leaders to keep giving ludicrous, self-indulgent and propaganda laden interviews if it were practicing ‘genocide?’

If Israel were committing ‘genocide’ against the Palestinians, does Abbas think he would have repeat access to the UN and world bodies?

If Israel were committing ‘genocide,’ would the nation be imprisoning alive and intermittently releasing some of the more dangerous Palestinian figures, activists and terrorists?

It will be most unfortunate if Abbas undermines yet another opportunity given him and the Palestinians while deliberately feeding the Israeli hard Right and selected members of the larger global community in order to hold onto his own skewed perception of power.

Thinking twice before giving such foolhardy speeches as the one he just gave to the UN would be a good start and point of reconsideration.
