The Jews have survived for 4,500 years, with a state, without a state, with independence, without independence, one way or the other.
The United Nations was founded in the aftermath of the the Second World War in a flush of idealism and guilt and one of its first acts was to recognize the re-establishment of the Jewish state.
Thank you very much and we needed that. But all they gave us were indefensible boundaries and the august body did not send troops to defend the beleaguered poorly armed settlers facing an invasion of five mechanized armies. It would send troops to Korea a few years later.
When all was said and done the state was put on the map thanks to the sacrifice of the Jews who took up arms against this array of enemies.
Ever since without respite the UN has turned into the world centre of anti-Semitic agitation, a veritable Reichstag-On-The-East-River.
At one point the unconscionable behavior at the UN was blamed on the Communist bloc playing realpolitik supporting resolutions such as “Zionist is racism,” but then the Communist bloc went and so that did that resolution. Nothing else has changed.
Now we have the Palestinians Arabs going to the UN and asking it to recognize a state which includes territory that belongs to Israel, to wit, part of the nation’s capital Jerusalem.
If Israel had been as intransigent as the Turks are in occupying part of Cyprus, I would say, okay, maybe they’ve got a point. But we’ve negotiated with these people now for 20 years, at one stage offered to meet 90 per cent or plus of their demands, opened the gates of our prisons and let free mass murderers of Jews to go instruct a new generation on how to get away with it, and for what? We gave them Gaza as a first step so they could establish their Singapore and we would go on from there. Instead they established the prototype for the terrorist ISIL nation now burgeoning in Syria and Iraq. We do not even ask the minimum that they first put their house in order so that we are not talking to a two-headed monster that cannot deliver peace even if they wanted to.
But this is going too far. Anyone can do this. Maybe some of you are old enough to remember the cartoonist Al Capp. He could have done this, gone to the UN, and asked them to recognize the country he created, Lower Slobbovia. He could draw the map anywhere on anyone’s territory and claimed it and this would have not been any crazier than what the PA is trying to pull off today.
We know the European Union, given its 1,000-year history of anti-Semitism, makes its policy in regard to Jerusalem on the 35-Synagogue Destroyed Rule. In Europe when anti-Semites ran Jews out of their homes in a town or precinct and destroyed 35 synagogues in the process, the Jews could never claim those homes or that area again. In Jerusalem in 1948 the Jordanians who had as much right to be there as Papua-New Guinea, expelled the Jews in the east sector of Jerusalem and destroyed 35 synagogues. Israel recaptured the east sector in 1967 but the EU will not recognize the results of the second war because the Jordanians had destroyed the requisite 35 synagogues and so the Jews can never have that part of their capital back.
When the Papua-New Guineans or whatever they are called overran Judea and Samaria, the UK immediately gave their conquest de facto recognition. Apparently they determined that this was no-man’s land, first come, first served, perfectly in accord with international law. That was the situation for 20 years and during that time the UN looked upon the status of Judea and Samaria as a closed issue, settled for all time. No one mentioned the “Palestinians.” In 1964 when some of them formed the PLO but it was not to liberate Judea and Samaria, but to drive the Jews out of Israel.
This all changed in 1967 when Israel captured Judea and Samaria, the ancestral homeland. Britain suddenly found that they had made a terrible mistake; this sort of thing is indeed contrary to “international law,” which they had discovered only the day before purely by coincidence. All the other nations followed the British lead.
Give me a break.
I am a classic apolitical centrist who votes sometimes on foreign issues, sometimes on social issues. This time I will vote for any party who promises to haul Israel out of the United Nations.
Enough is enough.
We have survived all these many years without sailing on this Ship of Fools, and we shall survive many more. We may just have to row harder, that’s all, out on the open sea.
Taiwan which faces an existential threat worse than ours and is recognized only by 21 nations who come and go is doing just fine.
Israel should quit the UN. As of yesterday.
