Actually, the word "lynch" is inappropriate for several reasons. The American Captain William Lynch, to whom the word is commonly attributed, took the law in the lawless, wild west into his own hands in the 18th century. Legend has it that since there were no laws or law enforcement, he "took the law into his own hands" and enforced what he and his supporters saw as a basis for their communities — i.e., tried and hanged people for stealing or whatever they saw as criminal (that often was in some way reflective of law in the colonies ot the young U.S.of A. In most of the cases where the word is used in Israel, the victims (whether in Ramallah or Zion Square) were utterly innocent. It would therefore be more appropriated to call them pogroms, as the attack inMalcha was more aptly called.
