Sid, i agree with your assertion about people gravitating to someone's opinion because they fundamentally identify with that view, and that as individuals we should think for ourselves. for those reasons, i do not consider a comedian's views about Israel to be particularly threatening or influencing anyone beyond those who already identify with his views. a community or ritual leader, however, who by nature is in a position to guide and to influence, poses a much more serious danger when his/her views express an opinion that endangers the safety or existence of Israel.

David -

I don't know the specific views that you are referring to as dangerous (though, for the record, I've only heard very positive things about IKAR)... But I will say that I wholeheartedly believe that as Jews (and human beings, truthfully) we have a moral obligation to think for ourselves. It sounds cliche but the ability to take in information, be it facts or opinions, and discern what we like and agree with and what we don't is what makes us unique as humans.... I have posted at other times (most recently right before the election) that rabbis/community leaders telling me how to think politically is almost a surefire way to get me to think the opposite way....

With that said - i think that often people gravitate toward a leader because they identify with that person's overall world view and approach to things... So without commenting on your two specific examples, I would just say that often people follow a leader's suggested approach not because the leader told them to, but rather, because they identified with that approach in the first place... But again, I would hope that whatever position people choose to follow, it's because they have thought it through and believe in its merit.

Sid, your point is well taken on centers of influence, particularly on the less informed, misinformed and uninformed. this is why community leaders like Rabbi Sharon Brous of IKAR and the Bnai Jeshurun group pose such a danger. the community looks up to them and many rely on their opinions to form their own. they are not entertainers; they are Jewish leaders on whom many Jews hang by their every word and sentiment. and when a community leader validates the opinions of an influential comedian like Stewart, that is when we have ignited the powder keg.

The argument of "who cares what the entertainer thinks about news" is somewhat misguided...the issue, IMO, is not whether they are qualified experts, but simply, do they have influence. Unquestionably, Jon Stewart influences his viewers.... I watch his show regularly but like Dave I brace myself if he starts talking about Israel, just hoping it won't be too critical.

I don't mind when entertainers use their platform to promote their views - free country, no one is forcing us to listen or agree or buy more tickets etc. and while avoiding nuance is not an unreasonable strategy, especially for a comedian/satirist, the rest of his material lives in the nuance. That's why it's so clever...and often why it's so funny.

Maybe he'll invite you on the show to debate, Dave...but I'm not buying any books.

Jon Stewart is a very funny and clever SATIRICAL political commentator. as is Bill Maher. as is Dennis Miller. they are entertainers, not newscasters. getting all bent out of shape over Stewart's mostly liberal based opinions seems misguided, when you have Meretz MK seat holders who spout the same opinions but without the canned laughter. THEY are the real enemies within. If you are offended by comedians poking fun at issues that you consider sacred, then switch channels. as long as the sponsors are happy with the ratings, Stewart is not about to change his shtick.

Well, most of my American news. I do look at various news sites, but the Daily Show helps a) to see what people are actually talking about, and b) as I wrote, the jokes help separate the fluff from the real issues.
