Hopefully, not being too little too late, Western European countries have decided to get serious about its Islamic thugs. Security forces have become proactive in hunting down terrorists and protecting Jewish communities and Israeli institutions. And to think it only took years and years of murder and mayhem inflicted on their citizens, many times by their own citizens, culminating in the butchery the whole world saw in France just over a week ago. Anyone with half a brain knew what was coming, what has actually been here for years. But a crackdown of this scale did not happen until magazine employees were shockingly killed. By the way, do you think there would have been this crackdown and that massive demonstration in Paris if all those murdered had been Jews? Freedom of Jews, eh. Freedom of speech? Well, that’s different.
Remember Salman Rushdie? It was back in 1988 when his book, The Satanic Verses, was published. It was a fictional work about Muslims and magic and it enraged many in the Islamic world because of its “blasphemy.” Soon enough, there were book burnings and violent riots by Muslims, and Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini himself, yes that Iranian mullah of American hostage fame, issued a fatwa calling on all Muslims to kill Rushdie and those associated with the publishing of his book. Rushdie survived by going into hiding, but in 1991 his Japanese translator was stabbed to death and others were killed or wounded because of that dastardly affront to the so-called “Religion of Peace.” Many pontificated that if we were only nicer to Muslims and were more careful about what was written or portrayed about Muhammed, things would calm down.
International media went into full politically correct mode after that; it didn’t matter that much worse had been written about other religions without any consequence. And since that time, European countries opened their doors, and social welfare coffers, to throngs of Muslim immigrants. Those countries did very little if anything at all to promote assimilation all the while standing idly by as neighborhoods became Sharia enclaves and many disaffected youth became radicalized. Much of the bullying and violence that proliferated was against Jews, but that was OK, because Israel was so intransigent with the blameless Palestinians, and well, those being injured or killed were, you know, Jews.
Fast-forward to 2015 and lo and behold, the killing continues all around the world, and worse, in more organized ways. ISIS and al Qaeda and their followers – “lone wolves” or home grown nationals under instruction, along with Boko Haram, the Taliban, Hamas and the rest of the barbarians blow up buildings, rape, murder and behead. If I were to list every terrorist action, or attack thankfully thwarted, overseas and here in the US, since former President Jimmy Carter thought it best to trade the bad Shah of Iran for the much, much worse ayatollahs along with Ahmadinejad (he was one of the “students” who kidnaped the Americans in 1979) and his cronies, it would take me too long to finish. Carter’s characteristic short-sightedness, to put it mildly, allowed a formerly stable and friendly-to-the-US-and-Israel Iran to morph into the world sponsor of terrorism, causing it to become the Jihadist “gift” that tragically keeps on giving. But hey, we were nicer!
I have the solution. It came to me when I saw John Kerry have James Taylor sing, “You’ve Got A Friend” to a French audience during a Kerry speech following the terror attack. Barack Obama or Joe Biden or John Kerry or Eric Holder, who for crying out loud was in Paris at the time, showing up at the large rally in France when so many other world leaders were there? Fugetaboutit. But that’s OK. We can send James Taylor to sing one of his sweet melodies to the wounded, insulted French. That will make them feel better. My sources tell me there was actually a list of singers and their feel-good ditties from which Kerry chose: Taylor and his song; “Lean on Me” to be serenaded by Bill Withers; Bobby McFerrin and “Don’t Worry, Be Happy;” Leslie Gore belting out “Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows;” and Wham, reuniting for, “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.”
But anyway, here is my solution to the Islamic terrorism problem. We have to be even nicer! And that James Taylor thing was so brilliant, we should add music to our diplomatic endeavors! We could call it, “Kumbaya diplomacy.” Trying to stop Iran from building nuclear weapons? Have Kerry take the touring troupe of the Broadway musical La Cage aux Folles with him to the negotiations! Oh wait, the Iranians might not like that one. Make it Rent. No, not that one either. Fiddler on the Roof? Syria and Iraq falling apart with the Islamic State taking control? Those Muslim fighters just might like Eminem and Kanye West. I understand that ISIS leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, is a huge hip hop fan. Those pesky, intractable Israelis still bothering Hamas and Hezbollah? Jimmy Carter could become the Israel/Palestinian peace talks ambassador, and he could take American Idol contestants with him as he shuttles between the protagonists. The Israelis might not be too thrilled with Carter but he has tremendous credibility with the Arabs. They know he never misses an opportunity to blame Israel for anything bad that happens when Islamists are involved, even when there is not the remotest connection to the Jewish State.
Nature abhors a vacuum, but terrorists welcome it. Before the United States became a world power, there had been a vacuum of leadership on most of the globe, most of the time, but perhaps that was why the U.S. came into being, to fill the void of apathy, incapacity and appeasement and the resulting chaos. But even as Europe finally – I hope, but at this point I do not truly believe it – gets its act together and even as France, of all countries, says it is now at war with radical Islam, President Obama still refuses to do the same. Isaac Asimov wrote, “The easiest way to solve a problem is to deny it exists.” Obama denies the obvious that it is Islamic terror, state-sponsored or otherwise, that is the most pressing scourge of the civilized world. He still wants to “make nice” when being nice to savages only reveals weakness and invites instability and evil. Barack Obama abdicated his responsibility of being a world leader long ago, and so I fear but hope I am wrong, that until he leaves office, the world will remain rudderless, flailing about, as it sinks further and further into a dangerous, tumultuous abyss.
