While a largely wonderful reading of the lyrics, I want to suggest an alternate understanding of עודני מאמין. There is a much more recent literary association that is likely to resonate with most Israelis: The words from the poem/lyrics to the popular song אני מאמין , better known as שחקי שחקי, written by Shaul Tschernichovsky. The poem is a creedal statement defying the Maimonidean creed with its humanistic faith. It has its share of biblical intertextual references, as well as the overall reference to Maimonides' Principles of Faith. It is possible that the lyricist of this song, in referring back to Tschernichovsky, may be commenting on how Israelis have nothing to put their faith in, coming to age in a society in which Judaism was highly polarized, and in which faith in humanity and human leadership has failed time and again.
