Hadassah Levy, I made aliya at 17 and honestly, it's probably the best time to make aliyah short of infancy, especially if you come with a chevra. This is his way of making sure he doesn't have the regrets 10-20 years down the road. But as a mom of a 17 year old I really understand how hard it must be to see your baby move away. Good luck to both of you.

You might let him go, but I'll be standing in front of that airplane blocking him! Just kidding, I think it is much easier to go and do it yourself than to watch a child leave for another country & join the army. You've raised him well, you should be Blessed with continuous nachas for another 120 years!

What a beautiful post. Letting go is one of the hardest things in life and although I have not experienced that yet, letting go of your children must be the very hardest thing. But the fact that you are doing it with so much thought, wisdom and bravery speaks volumes.

Your article brought tears to my eyes. Believe me I understand. My oldest came to Israel on his own, went to Gush, then made Aliiya with Garin Tzabar and was a lone soldier for two years. Zvi is still a soldier and we are so proud as he signed on extra time in an elite combat unit. We followed Zvi here this past summer. We moved to Modiin... Thank G-d, we have 4 kids. Three boys and one girl. It was clear that they each were determined to be here. G-d willing, our next in line to serve in the IDF following Midrashah is our daughter who will be mitgayeset soon. Having a chayal boded has unique challenges. We cherish being near him now. As you mentioned in your article, we could see the line up of three sons and a daughter all proud zionists! I know you are so proud. Letting go is not easy...I do not know what we would have done without Garin Tzabar, kibbutz Be'erot Yitzchak and Zvis' mishpacha me'ametzet-the Shne'ors! They were there for Zvi and there for us. They have truly become our Mishpachh in Israel. This is a country that cherishes its chayalim bodedim and does not take them for granted. If there is anything I can do to help you and your son it would be more than our pleasure. From one proud mother to another, they are all our chayalim! While they are labeled "lone" soldiers, trust me, they are not alone. They are supporated by a loving country!
