And so the cycle continues much as before, the saga claiming yet more victims and, no doubt, many others will follow tomorrow and in all the days thereafter.
More Israeli deaths, more Palestinian ones and still there is no end in sight, no mechanism to stay the hand of those on both sides, no one to see or sense the magnitude of such crimes and the utter folly of committing them.
Is this because the rest of us have not made it perfectly clear that these acts of murder, revenge, terror and despair have no place in a sane and civilised world? Or is this sane and civilised world of ours incapable of underscoring and delivering so vital a message? Have we all been too remiss by not forcing the issue towards some proper conclusion, unable to confront the problem in the most direct and transparent manner possible?
Has the matter simply gone too far for redress? What is left now that will stop the onward march of a conflict that has endured for generations, fuelled by the fears and hatreds that only Man can create?
Retrieval of the situation can still be accomplished but only if the measures taken will be more than sufficient for the task demanded of us. Otherwise, all those deaths and sorrows will have been for nothing, only a mute reproach for our failure to master the demons that have lain so long within us ALL.
