What is the deeper connection between leper and bodily emissions that they are included together in this week’s Parasha?
Three Types of Uncleanness
There are three types of “uncleanness” that warrant expulsion from the camp:
|צַו, אֶת-בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, וִישַׁלְּחוּ מִן הַמַּחֲנֶה, כָּל-צָרוּעַ וְכָל-זָב; וְכֹל טָמֵא לָנָפֶשׁ||Command the children of Israel, that they put out of the camp every leper, and every one that hath an issue, and whosoever is unclean by the dead (Num 5:2)|
The same three types of “uncleanness” are discussed together on the law about the priest:
|אִישׁ אִישׁ מִזֶּרַע אַהֲרֹן, וְהוּא צָרוּעַ אוֹ זָב—בַּקֳּדָשִׁים לֹא יֹאכַל עַד אֲשֶׁר יִטְהָר; וְהַנֹּגֵעַ, בְּכָל-טְמֵא נֶפֶשׁ, אוֹ אִישׁ, אֲשֶׁר-תֵּצֵא מִמֶּנּוּ שִׁכְבַת-זָרַע||What man soever of the seed of Aaron is a leper, or hath an issue, he shall not eat of the holy things, until he be clean. And whoso toucheth any one that is unclean by the dead; or from whomsoever the flow of seed goeth out (Lev 22:4)|
Their common denominator is about the body, with different degrees of severity and corresponds to three different parts of body and three Sefirot, as follows:
|Dead body||Most severe||Torso||Tiferet (beauty)|
|Bodily emission||Least severe||Sexual organ||Yesod (foundation)|
The dead body can be identified with the torso, which corresponds to the Sefirah of Tiferet.
Leprosy is caused by speaking evil tongues (lashon hara), this is well established by the rabbis. Speech corresponds to mouth which is of the Sefirah of Malchut (Kingdom) in Kabbalah. The leper is considered a walking dead, and the skin disease is visible to the public eyes and as such, he suffers public humiliation.
The bodily emissions are not visible to the public eyes therefore there is no public humiliation, as such, the condition is less severe.
The bodily emissions are of two types: 1) seminal discharge of male; 2) blood discharge of female.
According to Rashi’s reasoning, there are two degrees for the female: the minor degree is called Niddah נִדָּה, i.e. the menstrual period which is normal; the major degree is called Zavah זָבָה, i.e. the blood that flows outside of her normal menstrual period which is abnormal.
It can be derived, based on above, that there are also two degrees for the male: the minor degree is the ejaculation (i.e. during sexual intimacy) which is normal, the major degree is the seminal emission without sexual intimacy therefore is abnormal.
Once the minor degree is cleansed for both male and female, all that is required is to wash in water (Lev 15:16-18, 21); in contrast, the healing of the major degree of both male and female is followed by seven days of observation and on the eighth day, sacrifices must be brought and offered by the priest (Lev 15:14, 29).
The bodily emission is connected with the sexual organ, which is of the Sefirah of Yesod (foundation) in Kabbalah.
Yesod and Malchut
According to Kabbalah, there are two main organs for human expression and both are “open” in front: the mouth and the sexual organ, and both require circumcision. The circumcision of the tongue is for the mouth (Malchut), and the circumcision of the foreskin is for the male organ (Yesod).
When the mouth is not controlled, the result is Metzora (leprosy), the disease is manifested on the skin, and the damage is to Malchut.
It stands to reason that when the sexual organ is not controlled, the result is Zav/Zavah (flows), the damage is to Yesod, and the “light” will be blemished, as will be discussed below.
The “skin” עוֹר and “light” אוֹר are pairs (letter Ayin to Alef is vessel to light), hence leper (skin) and bodily emissions (light) are discussed together in this week’s Parasha.
The act of circumcision is to remove the covering “skin”, once the skin עוֹרis removed, the light אוֹר is then revealed.
The act of speaking at the simple level is connection, knowledge, but at the deeper level it is light shining forth, as it is written:
|פֵּתַח דְּבָרֶיךָ יָאִיר||The opening of your words give light…(Psalm 119:130)|
The gematria of these three words is 945.
The male organ at the simple level is also about connection, knowledge (euphemism for intimacy), but at the deeper level is also about light:
The sum is also 945, as above.
Through male organ (Yesod), man creates life in the physical realm; and through mouth (Malchut), man creates angels in the spiritual realm (rabbinical).
The gematria of “word of Malchut” דְבַר מַלְכוּת is 702, which is exactly the same gematria of “Angels are created from words” נִבְרְאוּ מַלְאָכִים מִכָּל דִבּוּר.
Root of Uncleanness
The root of uncleanness is death, due to the sin of Adam and Eve.
The sin was instigated by the snake speaking evil tongue, i.e. lashon hara, the result is pain in childbearing (Gen 3:16) and menstrual cycles (rabbinical).
When death becomes part of life, in order for life to overcome death, it must be procreated and regenerated.
Blood symbolizes death. When a woman conceives, her flow of blood stops, symbolizing life over death; in contrast, if her flow of blood continues, the potential for life is lost, symbolizing death over life, she is unclean.
If this is the case, why would the birth of a new baby render the mother unclean, like her menstrual period (Lev 12:2), is she not creating new life?
At the simple level, this is because the new life is separated from her, as an essential part of her is lost during delivery.
If the woman’s uncleanness is manifested in red (blood), the seminal discharge on the other hand is in white.
White denotes kindness (Chesed) in giving. The masculine giving must be contained in the feminine “might” (Gevurah) of the wife so that the egg can be fertilized in creating new life.
The seminal emission without creating new life is the same concept as menstruation, as a potential for life is lost, it is unclean.
If this is the case, why is intimacy between husband and wife renders them both unclean when such union is for the creation of new life (Lev 15:18)?
One simple answer is that the “seed” of man represents the “essence” of man, as such, while the man is engaged in creating new life, he has nevertheless lost an essential part (i.e. the seed) of him in the process, which renders him and those that comes into contact with him unclean, until the evening.
Eden, River and Garden
|וְנָהָר יֹצֵא מֵעֵדֶן, לְהַשְׁקוֹת אֶת-הַגָּן||And a river went out of Eden to water the garden…(Gen 2:10)|
Eden symbolizes father (wisdom), and Garden symbolizes mother (understanding), and the river symbolizes the seminal discharge, i.e. knowledge (daat) which follows from Eden (father) into Garden (mother).
The acronym of Eden עֵדֶן, River נָהָר, Garden גָּן spell Oneg עֹנֶג, meaning pleasure, as such the garden is also known as the paradise.
River in Hebrew is נָהָר, which also means light.
When the gematria of Oneg עֹנֶג pleasure is removed: 432 – 123 = 309, and 309 is exactly the gematria of the “seed of YHVH”, as it is written:
|עוּרִי עוּרִי לִבְשִׁי-עֹז, זְרוֹעַ יְהוָה||Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the LORD…(Isaiah 51:9)|
While at the simple level זְרוֹעַ יְהוָה means the arm of YHVH, by changing the vowel, it can also mean the (seed) sowing of YHVH זֵרוּעַ יְהוָה, or the sower of YHVH זּוֹרֵעַ יְהוָה, and the seed of YHVH is the light, i.e. Torah, and the sower of YHVH is Mashiach (Mat 13:37).
Manna is known as the corn of heaven and food of mighty, לֶחֶם אַבִּירִים וּדְגַן-שָׁמַיִם (Psalm 78:24-25), the gematria is 794, hence the average number of the two concepts is: 794 / 2 = 397, which is the gematria of אוֹר פְּנִימִי, (or pnimi) internal light, which is a Kabbalistic term denoting the level of light that enters and abides in a vessel.
According to Zohar (Tikunei Zohar 21, 54a), the Manna is the seed from the divine male organ:
|וַיִּקְרְאוּ בֵית-יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶת-שְׁמוֹ מָן; וְהוּא, כְּזֶרַע גַּד לָבָן||And the house of Israel called the name thereof Manna; and it was like coriander seed, white…(Ex 16:31).|
“… like coriander seed, white ” כְּזֶרַע גַּד לָבָן, is interpreted by Zohar as כְּזֶרַע גִּיד לָבָן, by adding a Yud to “Gad” thus rendering it as “Gid”, meaning: “like the seed of the male organ, white”.
In John 6:32, Yeshua identified himself as the Manna from heaven. Yeshua יֵשׁוּעַ in gematria is 386, exactly that of “… like coriander seed, white כְּזֶרַע גַּד לָבָן”.
It may be surmised that the English word “semen” etymologically came from the Hebrew word “shemen” שֶׁמֶן, i.e. oil, which denotes essence, and Mashiach מָּשִׁיחַ is called the one anointed with oil, i.e. the essence of God which is the seed of God.
In Chinese tradition, semen is understood as the “essence” of man, and a drop of semen is equal to ten drops of blood, thus connecting the seminal discharge with the issue of blood.
The seminal discharge in Hebrew is הַזָּב, which can permute to spell זָּהָב, meaning, gold, denoting the value of the seed.
Yesod and Malchut are male and female in union connected by the “seed”, the fruit of the “seed” is Mashiach:
853 is exactly the mirror image of 358, which is the gematria of Mashiach מָּשִׁיחַ.
Yesod is the Eden, Malchut is the Garden, and Seed is the flowing river that connects them.
The Woman with an Issue of Blood
A woman having an issue of blood for twelve years was healed by touching the border of the garment of Mashiach (Luke 8:43-48).
Twelve years alludes to the twelve tribes of Israel, hence the woman having symbolizes Israel being separated from God due to her uncleanness.
The healing comes from the border of the garment which in Torah is called צִיצִת הַכָּנָף, i.e. the “fringe of the corner” (Num 15:38).
When the “issue of blood” is healed, the gematria:
|fringe of the corner||צִיצִת הַכָּנָף||745|
|Issue of blood||זָבַת דָּם||(453)|
292 is exactly the gematria of “healing”, רְפוּאָה.
The fringe is called “tzitzi” which is rabbinically spelled with an extra Yud, as צִיצִית, rendering the gematria as 600. Rabbinically, Tzitzi alludes to 613 commandments, with gematria 13 supplied by the 8 threads and 5 knots.
This comes to teach us that Torah commandments symbolize the healing to the uncleanness of Israel, as it is written:
|רְפָאֵנִי יְהוָה וְאֵרָפֵא, הוֹשִׁיעֵנִי וְאִוָּשֵׁעָה כִּי תְהִלָּתִי, אָתָּה||Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved; for Thou art my praise. (Jeremiah 17:14)|
The gematria of this verse is 2775, which speaks of three steps: 1) healing, 2) salvation; 3) praising.
The average number of the three steps is therefore: 2775 / 3 = 925, which is exactly the gematria of the three categories of uncleanness, as follows:
|Seminal discharge and menstruation||זָּב וְנִדָּה||74|
The process starts with healing, i.e. Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed, רְפָאֵנִי יְהוָה וְאֵרָפֵא. The gematria of these three words is 655, exactly that of the “healing of Mashiach” רְפוּאָה הַמָּשִׁיחַ. This comes to teach us that the healing of God is administered by Mashiach as the “arm of YHVH”, or “sowing seed of YHVH”, who teaches the correct observance of Torah commandments.
Once the leprosy is healed, Torah requires a ritual (Lev 14:4) with the following four elements:
- two birds
- cedar wood
Mashiach in Zohar is identified as a bird. Bird here in Hebrew is צִפֹּר, the gematria is 370, same for: this is Mashiach, זֶה מָּשִׁיחַ. One bird was killed, the other bird was set free to the field. The bird that was killed is Mashiach at his first coming, the bird that was set free to the field is Mashiach at his second coming, for the field is the world, and only at his second coming will Mashiach rule as the King of the World.
The cedar is high and lifted up among the trees, it symbolizes haughtiness (Isaiah 2:13) which was the cause of speaking evil, the scarlet (שְׁנִי הַתֹּולַעַת) is the color of a worm (תֹולַעַת), and hyssop is a type of shrub, both are lowly in stature, symbolizing humbleness.
The average number for the four elements is:
1544 / 4 = 386
386 is the gematria of tongue לָשׁוֹן, i.e. the cause of the disease, and 386 is also the gematria of Yeshua, יֵשׁוּעַ, the cure of the disease, as the cure is in the cause.
If we remove 4 for each of the four elements to symbolize the “cleansing” process:
1544 – 4 = 1540
1540 is exactly the triangle number of 55 (i.e. the sum of 1 to 55), where 55 is the gematria of the Bride, כַּלָּה. 1540 is also the gematria of Israel יִשְׂרָאֵל when Alef is elevated to 1000, alluding to her exalted status once she is cleansed.
