Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann (R-Minn.) spoke the truth this week on Israel. Unfortunately, she was right that American Jewish organizations chose the Democratic Party over the State of Israel. Liberal values are more important than Jewish lives for so many American Jews. Shame.

As Bachmann noted during a radio interview, “What has been shocking has been seeing and observing Jewish organizations who, it appears, have made it their priority to support the political priority and the political ambitions of the president over the best interests of Israel. They sold out Israel.” She continued “The Jewish community gave him their votes, their support, their financial support and as recently as last week, 48 Jewish donors who are big contributors to the president wrote a letter to the Democrat [sic] senators in the U.S. Senate to tell them to not advance sanctions against Iran.” Many Jewish Democratic donors’ lobbied congressional leaders not to advance new Iran sanctions legislation, as Bachmann said, “This is clearly against Israel’s best interest.”

Bachmann is discovering precisely what Norman Podhoretz wrote in “Why Are Jews Liberal”, he rightly notes that “To most American Jews, then, liberalism is not, as has often been said, merely a necessary component of Jewishness: it is the very essence of being a Jew. Nor is it a ‘substitute for religion’: it is a religion in its own right, complete with its own catechism and its own dogmas and, Tertullian-like, obdurately resistant to facts that undermine its claims and promises.”

Podhoretz rightful notes that “where the Torah of contemporary liberalism conflicts with the Torah of Judaism, it is the Torah of liberalism that prevails and the Torah of Judaism that must give way.”

Many of these liberal Jewish organizations simply do indeed sell out the Jewish State – and harm American and Israeli interests in the process. Thank you Congresswoman Bachmann for telling the truth.
