Audrey, thank you so much for writing this. As a returnee to Judaism from a Latino crypto-Jewish family background, it is stories like this that help me reinforce that there is not just one "flavor" of being Jewish. In my area there used to be a synagogue that specifically addressed the needs of Latino Jews, and services were in Hebrew, English and Spanish. The rabbi was from Central America. It's gone now and though I feel connected to other MOT's through our Jewish heritage and faith, a part of me still feels like a stranger. I often yearn for that missing "chispa" that my old synagogue had. It's hard to feel connected in the same way to an all-white white Ashkenazi tradition that can't even begin to make me feel welcome as a Latino. I know to G-d, none of that makes a difference. But to humans, these are the ties that make us who we are and bind us together. So I'm grateful to read your post and know that I am not alone.

Ms. Bellis, I read your post and enjoyed it greatly. Especially the part about the jalapeno-laced latkes. Once, when I owned a beach-front bar and grill in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico (and I ran the kitchen) I had a young gentleman working for me who would stand around (during slow times only, he worked his tail off when we got busy) and chew on jalapenos like one might chew on carrots. (All the best!)

Jay- I think you're beating a dead point. We have established that I am Catholic in several posts. We have also established that in my family we keep many cultural Jewish traditions alive to honor and respect the side of the family that are practicing tribe members. You don't have to like how I celebrate but this (above) is how we do it.

Svietka- perhaps you should start a blog yourself then? There is a button to the right just below the list of bloggers where you can submit something less "feel nice" or to your tastes
