The trip to Israel will hopefully stay in his heart and mind for his future choices in life maybe even more than a bar mitzvah safari (u know the joke, right?). Btw, definitely watch "Keeping up with the Steins" with your son. My parents, me and my kids all laughed together watching it. P.S. I can give you some great ideas for your visit. Just saying. I don't deny that a significant amount of money is being spent, and my husband also reminds me that technically they are bar mitzva when they turn 13… everything else is "cake.".

Could we please keep in mind that neither the American nor Israeli extravagansas described here are either necessary to conducting a meaningful, honorable (mekhubad) bar or bat mitzvah nor affordable to a great many loving Jewishly-committed parents.

Kol ha kavod Lori! I fully agree with your choices and your reasons. Bar and Bat Mitzvahs and all manner of children's parties have become absolutely ridiculous in terms of scale and grandeur. Although children's birthday parties in IL (at least in TA) have also gone completely overboard. I wish you much joy and nachas during your celebration. Mazal tov.
