Jan takes the bus into San Francisco’s Financial District. As they approach the city she sees a man confront the bus driver and remove a knife from his waistband. He stabs at the driver as fellow passengers scream and begin to run towards the back of the bus. The driver struggles to maintain control of the vehicle as they approach the Bay Bridge. The man moves towards the rear of the bus, stabbing a woman in the head and shouting uncontrollably. He swings the knife wildly back and forth through the air as he charges the passengers. Fortunately, the injured driver manages to open the doors and people begin to flee. The assailant gets out and continues to chase down victims on the highway. He escapes, stabbing victims until he is shot by law enforcement. He later reveals he was inspired by “radical Islamic material with promises of paradise.”
