Dan, absolutely undeniably to truly understand an institution, one has to do far more than examine its website. But I don't think it's unfair to ask questions about an institution based on its public statements. (As to the beta-website argument, that's the only website that Reynolds has to go on.) I understand why one would be weary of the TOI pieces, but I just didn't think this one was out of bounds at all.

Michael, you have to look deeper than a website -and essentially a beta website at that. I found this an unnecessary extension of a debate that has been blown of proportion. I will say that the author of the piece does look quite a bit like Kramer from CNBC. So there's that.

Dan, I'm actually inclined to disagree. I thought his piece was thoughtful, and careful not to overreach in terms of conclusions, even as it asked what struck me as wholly legitimate questions. If a website is to some substantial degree the "public face" of an institution or a community, then I think it's fair game to analyze the public statements, or even the absence of public statements, on a given topic. And if it turns out that my own public "face"/presence/comments are out of sync with my values, then it seems I would want to rectify that.

What a wonderfully unnecessary commentary. I would study Dr. Reynold's website to pontificate about something that isn't there, but it is so poorly designed that I cannot look at it for more than a minute. The only thing that this entire debate has clarified is that the Times of Israel has the most flattering headshots of any website. Everyone who posts on the site looks much better and younger in their photos than in real life.

Gordis saw an internal e-mail from Brous to her 200 congregants at IKAR. The content was no surprise. IKAR has always been left-leaning ("progressive"). As Ron Reynolds points out, even in Los Angeles, other synagogues have a different perspective.

Gordis didn't like the email. He could have called Brous. He could have opened the lines of communication. Instead, he exercised his First Amendment right to comment publicly.

Brous could have picked up the phone. She could have called Gordis. She could have taken the high road. Instead, she responded in print.

Suddenly, a gaggle of rabbis and commentators joined the pile on. Most of the players know one another. It's an unpleasant and irrelevant exhibition.

For the rest of us, the long wars in Iraq and Afghanistan continue. The U.S. economy is at risk. Israel is at great risk. And most Israelis have never heard of the Masorti movement.

It's worth pointing out that within the past month, Israel's Consul General in Los Angeles, David Siegel, spoke during Shabbat services at Ikar.

And the community has been promoting its inaugural Israel mission which will take place this coming summer.

Finally, you'll note that at the very top of Ikar's website, it states that the site is under construction, which has been the case for the past year as the organization transitions from its old website. It may very well be that Israel content has yet to be added to the site.

There is actually great depth to Ikar's engagement with Israel. As you've written, you are only going off of what's on the website. However, I encourage you to engage with Ikar before judging its commitment to Israel.
