Harold, thanks for this very interesting blog. I know an intermarried couple whose experience was also very different. The wife never converted, and they observed both Jewish and Christian traditions when their children were very young. But when the children were slightly older, and the husband did not want the children going to church and worshiping Jesus, the wife [non-Jew, remember] insisted that the husband take the children to shul so they would have some religious foundation.

So he did, and the family became steeped in Jewish life, while still respecting the wife's religious beliefs [particularly Christmas, of course, which was referred to as "Mommy's holiday"].

It has all worked out beautifully, and I believe it is grounded in the respect that the couple had for each other [sadly, the wife passed away some years ago].

So we come back to Jewish values after all, and the many ways to express them.
