We're talking about a country where Marton Gyongyosi, leader of Hungary's far right Jobbik party, asked the Hungarian government for a list of Jews, and then when "pressured" by the government, backtracked and said we was just actually targeting those Jews in Hungary who also held Israeli citizenship. The point here is that Gyongyosi evidently felt he was standing on fertile ground to make such a request. Dana, I'm surprised that Holocaust denial is actually considered a crime in Hungary. Bottom line - don't expect more from Hungary. It will only lead to further disappointment.

Agreed. I prefer to know my enemy. And as has been discussed by TOI bloggers of late, the trolls and other haters who spew their venom do not so much change minds as preach to their particular choirs -- and give the rest of us the opportunity to respond with reason. My bet is that Dana is right in her skepticism. At the end of the day, Nagy probably wouldn't be reached through education or punishment. But if he were punished, the haters would say "the Jews run the world, and caused this man to be punished for expressing his opinion." Nagy is probably not going to see the light at the end of his museum visit. But perhaps someone reading about his sentence, someone who is not evil, but on the fence, will think, "Hey... I hadn't even heard there was such a museum. Maybe I could get some questions answered if I dropped by and checked it out."

Here's my problem with laws that restrict free speech: if you make it illegal to express a view, how do you know who holds these views. Do you think, in a modern world, that limiting their expression in one small geography stops the existence or dissemination of Holocaust denial? It doesn't. It just lulls Jews into believing there is less Jew hatred than there really is. And that is a mistake.
