Actually, David Goldberg, you are definitely right about a number of things here. I am quoting one instance of the Covenant, but there are others, all throughout our history, that reaffirm the original covenant that God made with Adam, then Noah, then Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, and then the entire nation of Israel. Taken as a whole, and understanding the meaning of the final covenant with Moses on the eastern side of the Jordan, and as discussed in the writings of the Hebrew prophets that followed: God's covenant with the Nation of Israel IS ACTUALLY unconditional. The exile that we are now just wrapping up is an integral part of the affirmation of the covenant. But remember: even though God promises that if we don't wise up, we will get the boot from the Land: He makes it very clear in many places that the Exile is temporary, and that eventually, he will be calling us back, like parents who have sent their misbehaving kid away from the table eventually call him or her back.

THAT is what we are witnessing today.

Jay, I certainly agree with you when you say the we have met the problem and it is us. Indeed , the problem is us. To lay claim to Israel based on the proof of ownership that you quote doesn't quite do the job. It's like writing a contract in your favor and expecting the other side to sign on it. This land is under contention by two peoples who both have a legitimate claim to it. You think our claim is better but that is not relevant since there is no court in this world which will recognize the basis of your claim as relevant. We will have to deal with reality which means we have to compromise. Like it or not, earlier or later, after paying a high price or a lower price. Compromise we will have to. Get with it Jay. There is belief and there is reality. Try to keep them apart and use each where applicable.

Actually, the Torah does provide a useful basis of argument with progressives and the self hating Jewish left. By demonstrating that the land of Israel is an integral part of Judaism, one can demonstrate that the attacks on Israel and thus an attack on Judaism, and are thus not only anti-zionist, but anti-Semitic, just like measures that ban circumcision and kashrut. Most anti-semites hate being identified and anti-semites, just like snakes that hate sunlight

Jay, I don't understand what exactly you are suggesting we are supposed to "wake up" to? we have our Jewish state - living proof of the Covenant. and yes, for geo-political, well intentioned reasons we relinquished some of our land. you are, however, quoting the Covenant out of context. This promise of our eternal inheritance is not unconditional. as a Jewish nation, and as individual Jews, we have strayed from the commandments that assure the Covenant will remain inforce. the Book of Prophets is a sobering reminder of what happens and what will happen if we don't take the Creator's words seriously.

the words spoken by Eisav in his heart that were conveyed to Rivkah via prophecy that he will kill his brother Yaacov after the mourning of father Isaac, may indeed be a genetically predisposed prophecy yet to be fulfilled. and what we learned from Yaacov in dealing with the constant threat, is that in addition to believing in the Creator, we also need to plan for war, and if need be, be willing to offer tributes to the enemy. and if you truly believe in the legitimacy of the Covenant, then you should also believe that in no uncertain terms will the land of Israel or any part of it ever be relinquished to another nation or enemy unless it is the will of the Creator. end of story.

Salomon Mizrahi, thank you for your comments. I beg to differ with you. I am in touch with Muslims and Christians all over the world who, unlike secular-thinking Jews like you and (once) me, are fascinated by what Judaism has to say about the world. We Jews have been repressing our heritage for too long now - it is time to stand up and say the truth as we know it, and let the marketplace of ideas determine what is right and what is wrong.
