Hamas said to reject humanitarian truce

‘Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri says the 4-hour humanitarian truce adopted by Israel is “meaningless, since it doesn’t include the hot areas on the border of the Gaza Strip.” ‘

‘He says Israel has adopted the truce “for media purposes.” ‘

Well, ‘media purposes’ are not to be neglected, especially these days when so much of the world is watching and reacting to the ongoing battles and everyday developments now taking place in Gaza and Israel.

But, as media events go, this one can hardly be considered all that mind-blowing and certainly it wasn’t original. It may last in the memory of some for a brief period of time but, after that, it will be gone and then heard of no more.

A real ‘media event’ needs to be extremely memorable, to have an extended lifespan, one capable of constant reproduction and reinvention. And its overall narrative must be such that even those members of the audience viewing the performance for the umpteenth time will still respond to its basic premise and traditional format. Think ‘parrot sketch’ here in Monty Python’s Flying Circus. ” Lovely plumage, the Norwegian Blue..”

Right now I would say that Israel and Gaza are in dire need of a ‘media event’ that will be remembered for a very long time, something that gets them both off the hook and offers real opportunities to go beyond their present situation and into a more regulated, stable and productive future.
