If Israeli diplomacy wasn't thoroughly bankrupt as it is today, we would have no need for explainers who feel a need to justify the inexplicable. A suggestion - take heed of the words you have written above: "Those of us who desire a two state solution would rather that neither side do things to jeopardize a negotiated settlement" Literally translated this means that Israel must stop settlement expansion immediatly according to the Bush roadmap, currently the only foundation left for any peace process.

'.....The two sides must negotiate an agreement.'

If taken as a prophetic statement, it's almost the equivalent of saying that, one day, Man must walk upon the surface of Mars.

Well, I'm sure that, in time, both these events will eventually happen. But, as to which will occur first, let's just say that the verdict is still out on that one.

In other words, even by adopting the most optimistic interpretation of present circumstances, the arrival of 'direct negotiations' is still very much a long haul affair and their successful outcome yet another matter entirely. And all this can mean only one thing; many more people, innocent and guilty alike, are going to die and others will be forever traumatised as this conflict is allowed to proceed on its sad, slow and painful journey to God knows where.

Only a massive upheaval in the present way of doing things can possibly serve to remedy the situation as it is now; something that is a wholesale rejection of the delays and foot-dragging that are the constant reminders of a long and bloody history. And those always persistent fears for the future.

And, with the situation as far gone as it is, there may be but one course of action left.

And, if even this remedy proves to be insufficient, then Man may still aspire to one day walk the sands of Mars. But part of him will lie forever crippled in the dust of the planet that gave him birth.
