Alan, i am Jewish and British and I was brought uo to refer to the bible as the "Old Testament" I even the other day talking to a Rabbi mentioned these very words .He said nothing although admittedly he referred to it as the Chumash. I think its just to differentiate between the "Old" which we follow and the one referred to as the "New" Testament which is how our Christian neighbours refer to theirs.
Re your above post, the newspapers in this country can be decidedly unkind and downright offensive. We really should not be any angrier than anyone else , for example high profile individuals, when the press turns its attention to say Bibi, tho" I did find it as offensive as others and for the same reasons. As for Harold Wilson, please, you are bringing back memories . The only thing I shared with him is the love of a good briar pipe.
Anyway, nice chatting to you.

Several points. The Times, Sunday Times is normally the top people's top paper, and displays no symptoms of anti-Semitism. The paper's proprietor immediately apologised, as did the temporary editor. Regarding Jesus and Christmas, one year Channel Four's special Christmas offering was a program suggesting that Mary was a rape victim and Joseph helped her cover up her illegitmate son -- Jesus! That program was no accident, and there was no apology. BBC once broadcast 'Springer: The Opera' abusing Jesus and Mary so appallimgly that even Jews and Muslims complained. 'Freedom' of the media means a lot of abusive things are possible here in the UK.

My Great Auntie Ranky in Walthamstow kept on her living room wall the original cartoon that appeared in a London daily in early June 1967. It showed a befuddled Prime Minister Harold Wilson saying to his European colleagues, "She was our friend once" as fiendish Arabs pounce on a defenceless Israeli in the background.

A lot has happened since that fateful month in 1967 including the content of British newspaper cartoons.

I read with rapt attention your remarks concerning that horrid illustration. But when I came to the last paragraph where you refer to The Bible as "The Old Testament" I stopped. That description of our book as "old" is no less odious than Scarfe's pen and ink. The Bible is a vibrant, living, modern and classic book with nothing old or hoary about it. So, in future please call it The Bible or The Jewish Bible. Thanks.

I don"t disagree with anything you have written.
It is accepted that cartoonists have some artistic license and some make a practise of being unkind in their depictions. However, given that the cartoon appeared on Holocaust day, the sensitivity of the situation in Israel and the unprecedented reaction of the world"s moslems to the publishing of anything they consider offensive, questions do have to be asked.
We read in this and other papers of the seemingly alarming level of antisemitism in the UK, most of it emanating from London. London is but a very small part of the UK which consists of four separate countries. Most Jews ( I am one ) in the UK scratch their head in bewilderment when we read of what has been described by those outside the UK of an almost pre war Germany situation. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Yes, there is no doubt that in certain parts of England particularly where there is a large Moslem presence anti semitism is being promoted. It would also be fair to say a similar situation exists on college campus and for the same reasons. I am in no doubt that the same situation exists in many countries other than the usual antisemitic hot seats. I understand that it is rife in Chicago, a few steps away from becoming downright dangerous.
Wherever moslems are concentrated whether they be arab, Pakistani or whatever, antisemitism springs up.
London has become a cosmopolitan city, some would suggest that it is on line to become an Islamic one.
My question would be that it is my understanding that anything for publication has to be passed , even where appropriate censored. How did this despicable cartoon with all its implications get to be published and further what were the names of those who were authorised to make this decision.
I suspect the results could be very revealing.
