In the $10,000 Torah Challenge someone wrote that perhaps it is true that Judaism does not pass through the mother according to the Torah, but it does pass through the mother based on thousands of years of Jewish tradition.
Yes, he is right:
Abraham deceived Pharaoh.
Isaac deceived King Amimelech.
Jacob deceived Isaac.
Rachel deceived Laban.
The sons of Jacob deceived their father.
Kind David deceived King Achish.
And now, based on thousand year old traditions, the rabbis are deceiving the Jewish people.
Judaism passes through the mother merely because the rabbis say so, not because of what is written in the Torah!
