The problem with Shas running this department is that they do so, with no consideration or interest in anyone other than their own voters. IT would not matter if an agnostic ran this department, the rules are made to fit each and every sector, not just the sector that runs the department. For that reason civil marriage should be allowed. It would not affect those wanting to marry by orthodox or ultra orthodox marriage, but it allows for other sectors of the community too.

Thank you Seth. Your point is made. Most of the rules that the "religious Zionists" want are there, but not enforced, and enforced they should be. We cannot have a department of government that is only interested in a small sector of society.

Not the first time in the history of Eretz Israel that a steel grip by a small sealous group has attempted to force all Israelis into 'my way or the highway'. The results are historically quite plain. The rifts meant that Israel was rife for take over by foreign invaders. He who does not study history is condemned to the same history over and over again.
Ministry of Religious Services has always been a place where the Shas party controlled and that is wrong as they enforce their views on many others who do not hold as they do (And yes it includes rabbis from all religious spectrum.) , the question is what should be done? Who should be making decisions? I mean if we appoint a minister who is national religious then the Ultra Orthodox community will feel left out and if appoint a ministry of only haredeem same situation on the other side , so a system should be built where all get a fair cut? This should be fixed already , going to the supreme court when most of the Israelis feel that that court is anti Judaism is wrong..
