IMPASSE (from Old French: im/im (not) + passer – (to pass)).

Thanks for the video, Neil. Matters do appear to have reached something of an impasse where the formation of the next Israeli government is concerned. No permutation of parties seems likely to form any viable administration in this already extended bargaining round. Even if such a coalition were to emerge, its hold on power and position might well be pried from its grasp by the conflicts and strains inherent in so disparate a collection of people and policies.

A government of national unity could be one answer but, at present, there is nothing in prospect to which the country's various power blocs can give their combined support or allegiance.

This internal difficulty is not dissimilar to the external problems that Israel faces. No group consensus or common direction has yet been found to address the dangers and differing agendas that contend throughout the region. The struggle for a united front there has been measured, not in mere weeks, but in decades, even generations. And the results – or lack of them - have been apparent for all to see over the course of much more than half a century.

Perhaps a government of global unity might now be the only way to achieve any real progress in an area long infamous for being in a state of almost continual turbulence.

This might even turn out to be a much easier task to implement than the one Mr. Netanyahu has on his hands at the moment.
