About one year ago in Beit Shemesh, Israel, an eight-year-old girl pupil was going to school when she was accosted by an adult ultra-Orthodox man and verbally abused. She ran home crying and showed signs of minor trauma. Demonstrations and counter demonstrations took place in the town and some have said that the situation has eased somewhat between the ultra-Orthodox community and the "modern" Orthodox community the girl belonged to. I was extremely upset at this incident as it played out in the Israeli media (now available on-line in English), thinking that this is all we need. We have trouble with our Arab neighbours (not to mention other non-Arab Muslims); we don't need to be fighting amongst ourselves. Yet I can't help but wonder at this "kulturkampf" taking place in Israel between the secular and the religious. Reminds me of the Hanukkah story. The assimilated Jews fought against the Zealots and blood was shed. As much as I don't want secular Jews victimized by ultra-Orthodox zealots, I also don't want this harassment to be a prelude to civil war. Mark my words, a bad incident is coming. Someone, somewhere, somehow will shed blood--Jew against Jew--over tzniut (modesty), Shabbos (Sabbath observance) or even kashrut (my kosher is better than your kosher). Don't laugh at the latter, it has precedence. Before we have a peace process with the Arabs, we need one amongst ourselves.
