You may very well be right in your analysis, Doctor David, and "The evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones."

And what 'good' is that?

Well, there is the knowledge that their outdated methods have long borne bitter fruit and problems inherited by this present age must, perforce, demand alternatives, solutions not given up to factional interests or so ordered at the behest of dominant cultures.

One way in which this can be accomplished is to arrange for the problems themselves to provide the answer.

If the matter can be remedied from the inside, made to work out its own internal fate, then no blame can be attached to outside agencies, no accusations flung at those not resident within its sphere of influence.

Everything contains within it the seeds of its own destruction. This law is a universal constant. Even the the universe itself will have to accept that limitation at some point in its existence.

But seeds need proper conditions in which to germinate and grow. They do not fare well in a vacuum nor do they prosper in poor soil where only the minimum of husbandry is present.

So, in a phrase familiar to British ears across two centuries, " The answer lies in the soil."
