There is a fundamental problem here: You're writing about "occupying" a place, but this place is ours to begin with. A small school child who reads Genesis will know that the Torah begins with the Creation of the World. But, as a history of the Jewish People, why does it not begin with the stories of the Forefathers or of when the Children of Israel became a Nation? Rashi answers: The day will come when the world will ask: Whose land is this? And we must answer: Look into the Torah-- The world was created by G-d A-lmight. He created it and He can do with it as He sees fit, and He gave this land to the Children of Israel for their inheritance forever. Ya gotta complaint? Go lodge it with The Eternal One! This is in regards to the land.

In regards to others living in Eretz Yisrael, even a non-Jew is allowed to live there, [a ger toshav] , but not only is he not allowed to throw rocks, but he's not allowed to lift a hand against a Jew. A person who initiates killing is not allowed, whether Jew or non-Jew--this is clearly one of the 7 mitzvot b'nei Noach that everyone in the world must keep.

If Gatekeepers wins tonite, it will be the 1st Palestinian movie to win. It will show some pathetic old men who want to cash in after a long and undistinguished career. It will reveal mediocre beureaucrats who are lusting over fame, kind of like an 85 year old man lusting after a 17 year old girl. It will be meaningless.

I hope Gatekeepers wins the Oscar for Best Foreign Film. It will force Jews and Israelis to reconsider the Catch 22 they're in. In my opinion the most interesting message in the whole film is that every time the Israelis succeed in their offensive military tactics, they, in fact, lose--because they have lost their souls, sacrificed their humanity by giving in to the barbaric nature of war and killing! Jean Daniel, the French (Jewish) journalist, superbly describes this whole dilemna in his book, The Jewish Prison--a must read!

Oh yes its a liberation. We might have the biblical right to the land, we might even have some legal rights by the fact that they started the war in 1967, but nothing can take away from the fact that there are X number of people who do not want us to control their lives, who have lived in legal limbo for 46 years. Who are not citizens of our state, but are not independent citizens of another, we can call it whatever we want but when everything is said and done was are controlling another people so you can define it any way you want. Maybe in 1967 at the end of the war we could have forced a different solution but that day is long passed and the longer we close our eyes and say there is no occupation the deeper we get in the mud. I do not have any simple solutions and half the time believe there may never be one, but that should not stop us from recognizing the dilemmas of controlling another people and always trying to be the ones who are responsible for looking for a solution. Its too late for my children no to serve in the IDF but maybe my grandchildren who are yet to be born will not have to- I can dream and we must dream
