ארז"ל על ריב"ז ארבעים שנה עסק בפרקמטייא וארבעים שנה למד, וארבעים שנה לימד, וכן אמרו על רבי עקיבה ג"כ ארבעים שמה עסק בעסקי העולם וארבעים למד, וארבעים לימד, וצריך לדעת למה נזדמן כך לשני צדיקים אלו שהיו עמודי עולם, אשר כל הדור שלהם תלוי בהם, והיה להם נשמות גדולות ונשגבות שהאירו לעליונים ולתחתונים, באור תורתם הנפלאה, ואם היו גם ארבעים שנה הראשנה עוסקים בתורה, בודאי היה בזה הרווחא גדולה להם ולעולם כולו, משא"כ בעסק הגשמי שהיה להם הפסידו ח"ו בזה הפסד גדול. וכפי האמור מובן הדבר, דאדרבה מחמת שעסקו ארבעים שנה הראשונים בעסקים הגופניים, נתעלה עסקים הנפשיים שהיה להם בשמונים שנה, מאה ידות באיכותם, כי ע"י שקדם עסק הגופניי לריב"ז בפרקמטייא בארבעים שנה הראשונים, אשר היה הטבע מכריחו לעזות בו השתדלות בכל כוחו ועוצם ידו, בחריצות וזריזות גדולה, נתלמד להתנהג כך אח"כ בעסק הנפשיי כפלי כפליים, וכן היה אצל רבי עקיבה ג"כ, שהיו נושאים באותה שמונים שנה בעסק הנפשי קל וחומר בדעתם מן עסק הגופני שהיו עוסקים בו בתחלה באותם ארבעים שנה הראשונים..

Aryeh, it's almost as though you didn't read Ellen's comment , she was referring to Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi Yochanan Ben Zakai, not the Ben Ish Chai.

Then again there are countless other great Rabbis over the generations who learned without working for years (first of which was Yaacov, who the Midrash says learned for 14 years before working for a living (for his father-in-law no less!)

I would like to see the Ben Ish Chai's comment in the primary source, as I suspect that the author has added some feeling not in the text.

We're not all on the level of the aforementioned tannaim. To work for 40 years and then spend the next 80 years (!) of one's life studying and teaching, and to top it all off, have the 40 years of work actually enhance one's Torah learning, is a blessing few will merit. In no other field of human endeavor is one encouraged to "do something else" for years, and only then study in his field, in order to become an expert.

Ellen Sandler Kolman: as I've heard said, 'you're entitled to your own opinions, but not your own facts.' it is almost as if you didn't read this article. So I'll requote the essential counterpoint to your own personal sentiments:

you may disagree with Yesh Atid based on your own personal views, but do you disagree with Ben Ish Chai?

Alon, I'm not going to disagree that people need to work but if you've got the mind of like, say, Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi Yochanan Ben Zakai among others then and now, whom, I might add are known for their words of Torah and not their working skills and are of the opinion, as I am, that learning Torah is what keeps this country going, then I most definitely would say that Yesh Atid is on the wrong path.
