A Ballad of a Nation in Need of Continuous Regeneration

Torah Portion: Vayeishev

This narrative changed the life of a nation

Due to separation from degradation,

Awaiting love for recalibration

For unity to bring regeneration.

Jacob sends Joseph to bring word of his brothers,

Shepherds, who tend flocks that were their father’s.

The brothers, jealous of Joseph, devise their plot;

Due to envy, they strip him of his colourful frock.

Reuben convinces his brothers not to kill him

But to discard him in a pit, a fate, less grim.

They behold a travelling Ishmaelite caravan;

His sale then saves his life under a Divine plan.

Jacob’s serenity after years of ruse

Is brought to an abrupt end with the news,

That Joseph has been devoured by a wild beast.

A story, with a well -known end brings exile, unleashed.

This narrative changed the life of a nation

Due to separation from degradation,

Awaiting love for recalibration,

For unity to bring regeneration.
