Always a choice

Is it really true that the rest of the world holds Jews to a much higher standard than everyone else?

If so, then, as the one and only people chosen by God, it must follow that He may be minded to do so as well.

Of course the trouble only starts when Jewish credentials fall far short of such lofty ideals and then the knives start to come out. But if Judaism can demonstrate that its adherents are still possessed of qualities over and above those in more general circulation, then attitudes and thought processes can change from negative to positive in virtually no time at all.

And this is one way in which it might be done. Indeed, circumstances all along may have allowed for no other.

But this technique would have to be put into practice at some point. If it remains in being only as a theoretical exercise, its net worth would be marginal at best and a unique opportunity to advance the cause of human welfare and understanding might be lost forever.

Even a Chosen People must have hard choices to make now and then. But it is only by virtue of such decisions that so special a status can be reaffirmed and its provenance communicated to all manner of men.
